  • Tuesday Lectio: Titus 3:3-6

Today’s reading is from Paul’s letter to Titus, chapter 3 verses 3 through 6. As we listen, can I pay attention to what the Holy Spirit might want me to hear? Are there any words or phrases that catch my ear or my heart today?

3 At one time we too acted like fools. We didn’t obey God. We were tricked. We were controlled by all kinds of desires and pleasures. We were full of evil. We wanted what belongs to others. People hated us, and we hated one another. 4 But the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared. 5 He saved us. It wasn’t because of the good things we had done. It was because of his mercy. He saved us by washing away our sins. We were born again. The Holy Spirit gave us new life. 6 God poured out the Spirit on us freely. That’s because of what Jesus Christ our Savior has done.

LORD, you are a God who is tender and kind. You are gracious. You are slow to get angry. You are faithful and full of love. Come to our aid, and have mercy on us. Show your strength by helping us. Prove your goodness to us, so that we can sing about it to the world. Let people hear our songs, know you, and be healed. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

  • Monday Lectio: Psalm 103:8-14

Today’s reading is from Psalm 103, verses 8 through 14. As we listen, can I pay attention to what the Holy Spirit might want me to hear? Are there any words or phrases that catch my ear or my heart today?

8 The LORD is tender and kind. He is gracious.

He is slow to get angry. He is full of love.

9 He won’t keep bringing charges against us.

He won’t stay angry with us forever.

10 He doesn’t punish us for our sins as much as we should be punished.

He doesn’t pay us back in keeping with the evil things we’ve done.

11 He loves those who have respect for him.

His love is as high as the heavens are above the earth.

12 He has removed our sins from us.

He has removed them as far as the east is from the west.

13 A father is tender and kind to his children.

In the same way, the LORD is tender and kind

to those who have respect for him.

14 He knows what we are made of.

He remembers that we are dust.

• Friday Lectio: Romans 12:17-21

Today’s reading is from Paul’s letter to the Romans, chapter 12, verses 17 through 21 . As we listen, can I pay attention to what the Holy Spirit might want me to hear? Are there any words or phrases that catch my ear or my heart today?

17 Don’t pay back evil with evil. Be careful to do what everyone thinks is right. 18 If possible, live in peace with everyone. Do that as much as you can. 19 My dear friends, don’t try to get even. Leave room for God to show his anger. It is written, “I am the God who judges people. I will pay them back,” says the Lord. 20 Do just the opposite. Scripture says, “If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. By doing those things, you will pile up burning coals on their heads.” 21 Don’t let evil overcome you. Overcome evil by doing good.

Our prayer this week borrows words from Psalm 86. The Psalms can give us good words that shape our hearts into places where patience can grow. They can show us how other people have waited and hoped in God. Will you pray with me?

  • Thursday Lectio: Psalm 37:1-9

Today’s reading is from Psalm 37, verses 1 through 9 . As we listen, can I pay attention to what the Holy Spirit might want me to hear? Are there any words or phrases that catch my ear or my heart today?

1 Don’t be upset because of sinful people.

Don’t be jealous of those who do wrong.

2 Like grass they will soon dry up.

Like green plants, they will soon die.

3 Trust in the LORD and do good.

Then you will live in the land and enjoy its food.

4 Find your delight in the LORD.

Then he will give you everything your heart really wants.

5 Commit your life to the LORD.

Here is what he will do if you trust in him.

6 He will make the reward for your godly life shine like the dawn.

He will make the proof of your honest life shine like the sun at noon.

7 Be still and wait patiently for the LORD to act.

Don’t be upset when other people succeed.

Don’t be upset when they carry out their evil plans.

8 Turn away from anger and don’t give in to wrath.

Don’t be upset, because that only leads to evil.

9 Sinful people will be destroyed.

But those who put their hope in the LORD will receive the land.

  • Wednesday Lectio: Galatians 6:7-10

Today’s reading is from Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia, chapter 6, verses 7 through 10 . As we listen, can I pay attention to what the Holy Spirit might want me to hear? Are there any words or phrases that catch my ear or my heart today?

7 Don’t be fooled. You can’t outsmart God. A man gathers a crop from what he plants. 8 Some people plant to please their desires controlled by sin. From these desires they will harvest death. Others plant to please the Holy Spirit. From the Spirit they will harvest eternal life. 9 Let us not become tired of doing good. At the right time we will gather a crop if we don’t give up. 10 So when we can do good to everyone, let us do it. Let’s try even harder to do good to the family of believers.

Our prayer this week borrows words from Psalm 86. The Psalms can give us good words that shape our hearts into places where patience can grow. They can show us how other people have waited and hoped in God. Will you pray with me?

  • Tuesday Lectio: 2 Timothy 2:8-13

Today’s reading is from Paul’s second letter to Timothy, chapter 2, verses 8 through 13. As we listen, can I pay attention to what the Holy Spirit might want me to hear? Are there any words or phrases that catch my ear or my heart today?

8 Remember Jesus Christ. He came from David’s family line. He was raised from the dead. That is my good news. 9 I am suffering for it. I have even been put in chains like someone who has committed a crime. But God’s word is not held back by chains. 10 So I put up with everything for the good of God’s chosen people. Then they also can be saved. Christ Jesus saves them. He gives them glory that will last forever.

11 Here is a saying that you can trust. If we died with him, we will also live with him. 12 If we don’t give up, we will also rule with him. If we say we don’t know him, he will also say he doesn’t know us. 13 Even if we are not faithful, he will remain faithful. He must be true to himself.

Today’s reading is from Psalm 130, verses 5 through 8. As we listen, can I pay attention to what the Holy Spirit might want me to hear? Are there any words or phrases that catch my ear or my heart today?

5 With all my heart, I wait for the LORD to help me.

I put my hope in his word.

6 I wait for the LORD to help me.

I want his help more than night watchmen want the morning to come.

    I’ll say it again.

I want his help more than night watchmen want the morning to come.

7 Israel, put your hope in the LORD,

because the LORD’s love never fails.

He sets his people completely free.

8 He himself will set Israel

    free from all their sins.

  • Friday Lectio: James 3:16-18

Today’s reading is from the book of James, chapter 3, verses 16 through 18. As we listen, can I open my heart to what the Holy Spirit might want me to hear? Are there any words or phrases that specially stand out to me today?

16 Are you jealous? Are you concerned only about getting ahead? Then your life will be a mess. You will be doing all kinds of evil things. 17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is pure. That’s the most important thing about it. And that’s not all. It also loves peace. It thinks about others. It obeys. It is full of mercy and good fruit. It is fair. It doesn’t pretend to be what it is not. 18 Those who make peace plant it like a seed. They will harvest a crop of right living.

Our prayer this week is called “The St Francis” prayer, after St Francis of Assisi, and it’s a good prayer to memorize, as we look for God’s peace to grow in our hearts:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

  • Thursday Lectio: 2 Timothy 2:22-24

Today’s reading is from Paul’s second letter to Timothy, chapter 2, verses 22 through 24. As we listen, can I open my heart to what the Holy Spirit might want me to hear? Are there any words or phrases that specially stand out to me today?

22 Run away from the evil things that young people long for. Try hard to do what is right. Have faith, love, and peace. Do these things together with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 23 Don’t have anything to do with arguing. It is dumb and foolish. You know it only leads to fights. 24 Anyone who serves the Lord must not be hard to get along with. Instead, they must be kind to everyone. They must be able to teach. The one who serves must not hold anything against anyone.

Today’s reading is from Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus, chapter 4, verses 2 through 6. As we listen, can I open my heart to what the Holy Spirit might want me to hear? Are there any words or phrases that specially stand out to me today?

2 Don’t be proud at all. Be completely gentle. Be patient. Put up with one another in love. 3 The Holy Spirit makes you one in every way. So try your best to remain as one. Let peace keep you together. 4 There is one body and one Spirit. You were appointed to one hope when you were chosen. 5 There is one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. 6 There is one God and Father of all. He is over everything. He is through everything. He is in everything.
