Here's an odd news story that caught my eye last week.
14 years ago a guy in North Carolina rented the
Tom Green movie, "Freddie Got Fingered".
Last week, he was got arrested — 14 years later —
because he never returned it.
The guy was pulled over because the car had a
defective taillight.
The cop went back to his squad car and ran the
guys information.
The officer returned to the car and told the man
to step outside the vehicle and that he was under
arrest because there was a warrant out.
Can you imagine the shock he felt at that
moment?
How scared he must have been wondering why?
Turns out, the store he rented it from filed a
complaint about him not returning the video.
So he got charged with "failing to return rental
property".
Wow, right?
A small thing like not returning a 15 dollar VHS
tape could compound and end up costing you more
lost time and money down the road.
I imagine if he knew the future, he would have
taken action back then and returned that video or
just pay the store for losing it.
It got me thinking why he didn't return it?
Maybe it got lost, and he forgot to tell the
store…
Or maybe it was on his to-do list — due to get
done… someday!
Maybe he was pissed he wasted $4 on the rental and
thought not returning the absurd comedy starring
Tom Green would save people from wasting their
time or money.
Whatever the reason was, days went by.
They turned into weeks… And weeks turned into 14
years later.
Suddenly, you get pulled over by the cops for what
you think is a routine traffic infraction, but you
find yourself in handcuffs, searched and taken
down to the police station for fingerprints and
questioning.
I can only assume the exact feeling he had, the
second he found out that stupid video tape was the
reason for his sudden predicament.
"Damn! — Are you F*%&$NG serious?
All this for not returning that stupid video?!"
It's so easy to let things slide.
It's so easy to get to things "someday soon".
Most of us become a slave to the urgent and ahead
of the important.
However, that approach will get you nowhere in
life.
As you can see, it doesn't work in life or with
your finances.
Learning how to use options to take money and keep
it in the financial markets is one of those cans
investors kick down the road.
It only becomes urgent, when you realize you don't
have much to retire on, and don't have the skill
or confidence to supplement your income with what
you have.
You become mad at the system for letting them
take their fee's and believing in them, but you
need to take ownership of your mistake and not let
it compound over 14 years.
You download free reports, youtube videos and buy
a few courses.
However, it just fills up your hard drive in a
folder because it's on your to-do-later list.
It catches your eye from time to time, but, at the
same time, intimidating you from not getting
started.
You can say this was guy lucky after the situation
because even though he got arrested and was
required to show up in court, the charge was
dismissed.
It could have been avoided, though.
Supposedly, the whole thing only cost him $300,
lost time and deeply humiliated.
How much will it cost you down the road if you
don't get ahead of your investing?
How many opportunities are you losing out on
because you're not clear on how to approach the
markets and leverage options successfully?
How much time are you letting go by for a skill
set that is invaluable and will last you a
lifetime?
My guess, it's worth a lot more than $300 and all
the saved free information on your hard drive.
Instead of renting this and possibly being arrested
down the road for keeping a great book that
teaches you how to trade options successfully,
you can buy for a small investment today.
