Snowstorm leaves more than half a million without power. A quick-hitting blast of winter weather left several inches of snow blanketing parts of the Southeast, before spreading into the mid-Atlantic, where it shut down much of the nation’s capital.
Forecasters are also keeping an eye on another storm that will present a risk of wintry weather to the Northeast from Thursday night into Friday. This potential system is still several days away, but AccuWeather meteorologists will continue to keep a close eye on it, even after the first snowmaker departs by Monday afternoon.

A weather pattern favoring fast-moving storms and just enough cold air could allow snow to fall before, during and just after Christmas in parts of the Northeast.
Record-challenging warmth is forecast to bring springlike or even summerlike temperatures to a large part of the country this holiday weekend. Some milder air is forecast to creep toward the mid-Atlantic region, but it won't overspread the entirety of the Northeast, keeping the chances alive for some that a white Christmas may take shape.

Snow is forecast to return to part of the northeastern United States this weekend, but rain will fall on other areas and could dampen hopes for a white Christmas. Last-minute shoppers in the Northeast should have rain gear in hand and others may need an ice scraper if they plan on hitting stores on the last Saturday before Christmas, AccuWeather meteorologists say.
