Rabbi Saadia Gaon’s sefer Emunot V’Deot (Book of Beliefs and Opinions) innovated the genre of Jewish philosophy. Long before Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi and the Rambam, R. Saadia paved the road for viewing Jewish principles through a lens of classic Greek philosophy, the science of his time, and is justifiably where Jewish philosophy begins. Join Rabbi Daniel Korobkin as he explores this important, monumental work, tracing the differences in approach between R. Saadia and those who came after him.

This week we will analyze the Shtei HaLechem of Shavuot, the waving with the two sheep, and whether the loaves and sheep are mutually indispensable. We will then learn about the broader principles of communal offerings, clarifying when components are me’akev, how improper intent affects them, and when communal korbanot override Shabbat or tumah. The Gemara then discusses the Chavitin (daily meal-offering of the Kohen Gadol), its preparation, division into two daily portions, oil and frying requirements, funding source, and what invalidates it.

We will then learn about tzitzit, deriving the requirements for the number of strings, inclusion of techelet, proper tying, and which garments are obligated, including the parameters of wool and linen combinations. The section ends with an aggadic teaching highlighting the spiritual power of tzitzit to protect from sin and cultivate constant awareness of mitzvot.
