Join Rabbi Dr. Zvi Leshem as he explores a drasha in the Pri Zaddik, the Torah of Reb Tzadok HaCohen, on Shabbat Shuva and Yom Kippur, with the hope of understanding more about Shabbat, Teshuva, Aseret Yimai Teshuva and the amazing process of renewal we are moving towards, and moving through.
In this shiur with Rabbanit Yudit Samad we will explore how the sounds emanating from the shofar trigger national memories
This week we will learn about tumat neveilah (the ritual impurity of animal carcasses) and tumat ochalin (the impurity laws governing food), including the special case of ever min ha-chai, a limb hanging from a still-living animal. The Gemara also teaches about a dangling limb or piece of flesh still attached to a live animal, weighing whether it counts as food susceptible to impurity versus impurity from a limb of a living creature. We will also begin the 10th chapter, which discusses gifts that are given to the Cohen.

Join Rabbi Uri Cohen as he tries to understand the origins and meanings behind some of the seemingly strange traditions of Rosh HaShanah. We will examine eating the symbolic foods, dipping the apple in the honey, the perplexing problem of eating nuts, and the custom of not sleeping on Rosh Hashanah.
The Piaseczner Rebbe’s drashot on Rosh HaShana, both before and during the Shoah, revolve around a parable of a king and his exiled son. Each year the story shifts subtly, while in the last year of the Rebbe’s drashot (RH 1941) it disappears. As we consider the reasons why we blow shofar and themes surrounding the sounds, join Rabbi Dr. Zvi Leshem and trace this theme in the Rebbe’s drashot and how it mirrors the increasingly difficult historical context.
In this shiur with Rabbanit Yudit Samad we will explore how the mitzva of Shofar relates to the essence of Rosh Hashanah and to the historical event which it may be commemorating
This week we will learn about the rules of tumat ochlin (food impurity), which requires a minimum egg-sized amount but can be supplemented by the animal’s skin, solidified meat juice, bones, sinews, horns, or hooves, contrasted with tumat neveilah, which requires a kezayit (olive volume) of actual meat and cannot be supplemented. The Gemara also teaches about the concepts of yad (handle) and shomer (protection), establishing that a handle attached to food transmits tumah but does not supplement the food’s volume, while a shomer that protects the food both transmits tumah and supplements its volume.

The idea of “doing Teshuva” is often a daunting one. This can make the process of Elul and Tishrei seem overwhelming. Join Rabbi Dr. Zvi Leshem and explore a wide range of sources from Hasidism and Rav Kook, as we look to examine alternative approaches to Teshuva and hopefully traverse this special time more positively.
