Affordable housing affects everyone, whether directly or indirectly. We are at critical need when it comes to housing, especially those whose income cannot meet the current housing cost. Valley Affordable Housing Corp. (VAHC) is a private non-profit 501(c) (3) organization created over twenty years ago to develop, own and manage safe, sanitary and suitable affordable housing properties for income qualifying individuals. We ask Jeff Swanson, CEO of Valley Affordable Housing Corporation to help us understand the complex nature of the housing equation. He notes that the median price of homes in RI has reached $430K. and that the inventory of homes is low due to COVID and supply restraints. So, Jeff states that we're in a housing supply crisis and what makes matters worse is the time-consuming process creating an approximately seven-year lag between "shovels in the ground" to tenant leasing. He also explains how his many years and history with RI Housing has helped him navigate this lengthy process, enabling VAHC to manage 566 units across the state, with the highest concentration in the Cumberland area. Unfortunately, the issue cannot be solved overnight, however VAHC is making strides to help.
