Week in Review

Last Sunday’s meeting in Devonport concluded a stretch where eight of the first nine meetings of the season were held at the track. On episode 35 of the Week in review podcast, Matt Reid takes a detailed look at the most recent seven-race program but also a broader look at the last two months of racing.

Despite having just the seven races, three riders had doubles on Sunday, a pair of winners for Erica Byrne Burke took her season tally to 15 and more than double that of any other jockey.

Matt takes a detailed look at the standout performers at both ends of the trainer and jockey Premiership tables and reflects back on last season’s Launceston numbers where Brendon McCoull and Siggy Carr were the two best performed riders.

On episode 34 of the Week in review podcast, Matt Reid focuses on Sunday’s eight-race card in Devonport which saw doubles for Adam Trinder, Brendon McCoull and Daniel Ganderton.

Trinder’s first winner came in the form of Incriminate and Matt thinks that maiden will be the best form race on the program, suggesting the first four across the line could be horses to follow next start.

The second leg of Trinder’s double was completely abandoned by punters, Miss Tuppence defying a bizarre betting drift for an easy win and running good time in the process.

There is a lot for Duncan Dornauf to cover on this week’s Harness Highlights podcast with meetings in Hobart and Devonport this weekend.

Duncan starts with a look back at the Launceston card last Sunday, one that was dominated by Ben Yole who trained half of the 10 winners. It was a program that produced a mixed bag for favourite punters, one betting move that come off at a price was on Kuzma who was backed in from $41 to $21 for an upset victory.

Conor Crook is making a charge for the state’s drivers’ Premiership and Duncan spoke with Conor to discuss some of his top drives across Hobart and Devonport.

Codi Jordan was the only jockey or trainer to have multiple winners in Devonport on Sunday which is the program that Matt Reid focuses on for episode 33 of the Week in review podcast.

Deroche managed a narrow first-up victory in a small field but Matt dissects her first-up form and suggests that she’s likely to take significant improvement from that performance.

Lucky Bucky is a runner that Matt flagged previously making him a Black Book runner, and he returned with an impressive first-up win despite a huge market drift. Matt says that considering where he’s at in his campaign and the 61kg he carried, the win of Lucky Bucky was arguably the performance of the day.

All eyes were on The Inevitable to open the program in Devonport on Sunday and on episode 32 of the Week in review podcast, Matt Reid thinks that win may have been a bit better than it originally looked.

Carrying 61kg, The Inevitable worked home with the fastest last 600m and 400m of the day for an overall time that was around 3.5 lengths off the 1350m track record. Matt says connections will rightfully think that run has them on track to return for the Newmarket on 1 December.

Later in the program Adam Trinder had a race-to-race double which has taken him to the top of the Premiership table, with a highly impressive 36% winning strike rate after the first month of the new season.

Eight individual trainers shared the spoils in Devonport last Sunday which is where Matt Reid has focused on for episode 31 of the Week in review podcast.

Matt identified Rising Light as a Black Booker after his first-up run in Devonport and was rewarded on Sunday where the gelding was heavily-backed before delivering what Matt says was arguably the performance of the day.

Gee Gee Plane was expertly ridden by Troy Baker to deliver the first half of a double for the jockey and the horse’s third win in succession. The class one (1150m) was one of the more highly anticipated races of the day and it’s from that race Matt has found a new addition to the Black Book.

Devonport had the first program of a sustained stretch of racing on the synthetic last Sunday and Matt Reid’s lack of winners in his Staking Strategy hasn’t stopped him dissecting the meeting in the Week in review podcast.

Adam Trinder had a treble of winners, the impressive Cheeky One just continues to notch up victories but Matt was taken by the first-up effort of stablemate Vivilici who finished with the fastest stridemaster sectionals of the day to run over the top of her rivals.

Matt also discusses the continued dominance of emerging apprentice Erica Byrne Burke who’s four winners on Sunday took her career strike rate to a ridiculous 33%.

On episode 29 of the Week in review podcast, Matt Reid centres on the Hobart meeting that saw another dominant day for trainer Scott Brunton who had five winners.

With Sunday being the last grass meeting until October, it’s likely that the majority of runners will be taking a break which makes finding runners to follow a little difficult.

Matt had a pair of Black Bookers on Sunday, each running a place that he is happy to stick with and has made a new addition from the Gary White stable.

The first meeting of the new season was run in Devonport on Sunday and early premiership leads are with Team Wells, Stuart Gandy, Siggy Carr and Troy Baker after respective doubles on the eight-race program.

On episode 28 of the Week in review podcast, Matt Reid works through that program, paying extra attention to the second race which produced a very impressive winner and a plunge that went amiss on Broadway Babe.

Cheeky One continued to build on her picket fence in the first leg of the quaddie and Matt says that her ability to win from forward or back will have connections particularly excited about her prospects going forward.

The 2020/21 thoroughbred season concluded on Sunday with an eight-race program in Hobart which is the main talking point for Matt Reid on the Week in review podcast.

A timely treble for Codi Jordan delivered her the Tasmanian apprentice’s title while Scott Brunton but capped off his dominant season with four winners.

The day tossed up a number of very poor performances compared to market expectation which Matt says poses some challenges for punters on what to make of those efforts next start. Jeremiah, Galway Girl, We Deserve This and La Dernier Fille are all in that category while the final two winners improved out of sight from their most recent starts.

Matt has taken one Black Booker out and added a new one in from the fourth race on the program and continuing to follow a runner that was well backed, but didn’t land the prize on Sunday.
