The Gospel of John is a story of Jesus divided into two parts. The first part is concerned with showing the signs of Jesus, or the miracles he performed. The second half of the Gospel is all about Jesus' glory. Glory is a word that means gravity, magnitude, or weight, and the closer John's story takes us to the Cross, the more we begin to see Jesus for who he really is. Matthew, Mark, and Luke present Jesus as an enigma, a puzzle that readers must wrestle with. John presents Jesus as the Great "I AM," making clear statements about Jesus' identity. When Jesus feeds the 5000 he says "I AM the bread of life." When Jesus heals a blind man, he says to the crowds "I AM the light of the world." When he calls Lazarus out of his tomb, demonstrating his authority over life and death itself, Jesus says "I AM the resurrection and the life." Jesus is the True Vine, the Good Shepherd, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and as we journey with him to the Cross the next few weeks here at the Refinery, we will find ourselves transformed in the brilliant glory of who He was, who He is, and who He always will be.
