Tech News and Commentary

Dave and the team discuss toilet paper scams, online home schooling hubs, teaching classes via video conferences, Zoom fixing privacy and security issues, ASMR for self-isolation, a smart toilet that detects diseases, and more.

Ansley in Brunswick, Georgia listens on 93.7 WBQO and asked: "I'm concerned about the 5G interfering with the bees. I know that sometimes the cell phones in the woods disrupted their patterns and obviously this is our food supply, so it's important. So I was just wondering if you knew if 5G would adversely affect the bees communicating with each other."

Ansley, 5G is slated to use frequencies between 450MHz and 6GHz. Of that spectrum between 700MHz and 2.1GHz is already in use by LTE, so that chunk of the frequency is already in heavy use in a similar application.

That leaves 450MHz to 700MHz and 2.1GHz to 6GHz.

450MHz to 700MHz is currently in use by regular TV broadcasts, it’s not empty spectrum either. 2.1GHz to 6GHz is being used by a whole bunch of other things like satellite TV and radio, communication between buildings that uses microwave antennas, radar systems, and even plain WiFi and Bluetooth.

So none of that spectrum is empty now and we won’t be using frequencies that we’re not already using.

Whether those frequencies can affect bees in any way is a question for “Into Apiculture: Your weekly trip into beekeeping”, but given that bees sometimes like to build their homes next to ours (which are already using signals from TV broadcasts, cellphones, WiFi, and more), and rather than die from the signals, they can sometimes build enormous hives inside our walls, our guess is that they’re not bothered by our electronics.
