Gordon in Westland, Michigan listens to the Podcast and asked: "I have some old tech stuff, like pagers, beepers, cell phones. I want to recycle them. I don't want to throw them into the trash. Who can I give them to or sell them to, or whatever to get rid of them, so that they will not go into the trash bin and fill up the landfills?"

 

Gordon, you have two main options for getting rid your e-waste (at least they kind you can’t sell to a reseller like Gazelle).

You can take it to a business that will take it off your hands and likely sell it afterwards. BestBuy provides that service for free, Staples does too, but you may want to check to make sure your location will take your items. Normally the process amounts to little more than driving there and dumping your old tech into a bin, but no all stores are the same so checking first may save you a trip.

Your other option is to take them to a recycling center or event. Livonia seems to hold an e-waste recycling event and they’re just up the road from Westland. Westland itself the very least used to take e-waste as part of their household hazardous waste pickup, but you may want to check that’s still the case, since the mention we found was from 2015.

A good chunk of your electronics will be recyclable and toxic, so it’s good that you’re giving it new life and not polluting the ground with heavy metals and dangerous chemicals, you should find reasonable options around you so you don’t have to and your easiest one will likely be putting them in a box and driving them to Best Buy.
