Tech News and Commentary

Dave and the team discuss a different Apple speaker patent, Apple techs being allowed to touch iPhones fixed by others, Uber's list of forgotten items, Corning's flexible glass, a disc-less Xbox, the demise of the Dash buttons, Alexa the DJ, and more.

Nancy in Gilmer, Texas listens on KTBB and asked: "Comment and a question. You were mentioning your birthday. Happy Birthday, by the way. Facebook has it setup so people can donate in honor of your birthday for various causes. I saw recently where someone said to read the fine print because you could be signing up for a monthly contribution to whatever the cause is. So you might want to look into that and be aware. Now my question. Can you recommend a reliable wireless backup camera that we can use for parking our travel trailer. Not a permanent mount. Something my husband can attach and remove when parked. If there is one that doesn't require Wi-Fi, that would be wonderful. Some camping areas are not covered by my carrier."

Nancy, there are backup cameras meant specifically for the purpose you describe.

For example, the RVS-83112 is designed to stick to an RV or 5th wheel using a strong magnet. It will put out it’s own wireless signal and connect to the screen that it comes with, which sits in your car. Unfortunately, it is more expensive than those license plate cameras you’ve probably seen around the neighborhood. This one will cost you around $150.

If the magnet doesn’t inspire too much confidence in you, you can also look at a version that screw into place, the CAMONS digital backup camera will do just that and still connect wirelessly to its screen in the car, and it will cost you around $170.

Just for some contrast, those permanently mounted license plate cameras can cost as little as $20 or $30, so they may be worth considering if you don’t mind doing a little bit of wiring and keeping them in place.
