John in Tyler, Texas listens on KTBB and asked: "Lately I've been trying to get a system setup where I can help my grandfather review his old formatted videos. I have been able o get some of those from cassette tapes to MP4 videos that I can put on computers. Trying to figure out how I can best help him display those on computers or modern day electronics. I've got him setup on a computer but I've got no OS setup on it yet. So if you've got a recommendation on an OS or maybe a program that I can run in Windows to view those in the best format."

John, just about anything will play MP4 files.

If you install Windows 10 on that new computer youre setting up for him, it should come with Windows Media Player which is capable of playing MP4 files, so you really wont need to do anything more than just double click the file.

If you used any special compression codecs you may need to install those first, but wed try to open the file with everything as it is out of the box first, it will likely work.

If for whatever reason that doesnt work you can try a free player like VLC player. VLC is very capable and likely to be able to play your files.

The same goes for MPlayerX. They have both been around for a very long time and are regularly updated, so they may be good alternatives if Windows Media Player wont do the job for you.
