Cathy, there are some more things wed need to know to really be able to recommend one, but well try.

For example, does he have power outside? If he does, any will work as long as they remember to bring it back inside after theyre done and they have decent enough speakers to plug into it. If he doesnt, theyll need something portable with a built in battery and speakers.

Most people who want backyard projectors dont have power and want something portable so well focus on those, since theyre the most likely to help in this case.

The LG PF50KA is meant to travel, its fairly small, it has good image quality at 1080p resolution, and a battery life of about 2.5 hours.You can find it online for about $650.

Ankers Nebula Mars II Pro is also portable, it also has speakers and has better battery life at 3 hours, but the resolution drops to 720p. The price does drop a little too, but its still in the $500 to $600 range.

A ViewSonic M1 will cost you less at around $150, it comes with better speakers than most, it has a 6 hour battery life, and its very light at about a pound and a half, but the resolution drops to 480p, and while we havent focused on lumens because all battery powered projectors compromise on them to extend battery life, this projector scores pretty low in that category at just 250 lumens.

There are more expensive projectors as well that can do 4K, but given the price of these and they fact that you want one for outside use, weve skipped those. For example, the LG Cinebeam can do 4K and its portable, but it will cost you a couple of thousands (and the speakers arent great).
