Weekly Sabbath Sermon

Some say we can ignore any OT commandments, rules, or requirements previously issued by YHWH unless they are reiterated in the new testament. We (UCG) do not agree with, or use, this formula. But, since it is so popular we are willing to address certain points of God's instruction for living using these humanly devised standards.

Today, let’s discuss the case for tithing in the new covenant.

Among the multiple defining characteristics of the Church of God is the ongoing work of the Church in preaching the “gospel of the Kingdom of God”. It’s a phrase that means many things to many people.

So, we are going to look into what preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God means. Because if we accept that it can mean many things to many people then it doesn’t belong in our list of identifying features of the Church of God.

We don't know a lot of details about Jesus growing up. But, today we are going to look at what we do know. This will serve as a conclusion to the previous two messages about Jesus' conception and birth.

Of all the things that could have been said about Jesus as a pre-teen, or teen... we are only told what is most important... He actively sought out understanding of God in His youth. The bible is consistent on this point: seek God while you are young.

The circumstances of Jesus' birth tell us about how God sees life. Humanly devised systems of status, power, and wealth mean nothing to God. So we should ask, why do they mean so much to us?

God has a plan for you... salvation from death... resurrection... placement within His family... participation in the universal rule of God. And, it is not based on your material achievements, status, or wealth.

A better picture of God's life priorities is found in Jesus' birth in the flesh. Nobody in this world, but set apart, to serve God's purpose, to give Himself as a sacrifice to God, and to rise up to everlasting life.

With that in mind, let's review the birth of Jesus and consider the different reactions it produced in those who were on the scene.

God's great plan of salvation is worked out through the humble: Israel a nation formed out of lowly slaves... David the shepherd exalted to rule... and God's selection of a humble teenage girl from a remote farming village to give birth to Jesus... God with us.

A lot of human time and energy goes into the study of war, news about war, analysis and commentary on war, recovering from the last war, preparing for the next war.

But, followers of Christ are called to become people who have learned to be peacemakers... those who do what needs to be done to make peace.

In May 2023, archaeologist Scott Stipling published his discovery of an altar on Mount Ebal which proves to be the very one mentioned in Deuteronomy 27 and Joshua 8.

Within the covenant there were blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. This is the curse of the law Paul referenced in Galatians 3:10.

What does the ceremony of blessing and cursing teach us today?

Today, we will look at the "promised land" within the covenant, and the spiritual reality it points to.
