"Fortress Besieged" is a novel written by Qian Zhongshu. It is a satirical novel with a unique style in the history of modern Chinese literature. It is known as the "New Scholars". The first edition was published by Shanghai Chenguang Publishing Company in 1947. The story mainly describes the group portrait of intellectuals in the early days of the Anti-Japanese War.

The novel uses Fang Hongjian's life experience as the main narrative clue, and vividly describes his work at Sanli University before and after returning from studying abroad, his constant quarrels with Sun Roujia after marriage, and his process of having to travel between Shanghai and Chongqing to pursue career, love and marriage after losing his job. The novel deeply explores the philosophical proposition of people's survival dilemma in modern society, that is, the desperate pursuit of career and marriage by people "outside the besieged city" and the dissatisfaction and boredom of their career and marriage by people "inside the besieged city". Hope and disappointment coexist in them, and happiness and pain are changing at any time.
