In Episode 4, we explore the fourth f...
This is the f that we mentioned in the Episode 3, for those who may have missed the previous podcast, tune into Lockdown & anxiety.
Just over sixty percent of the clients that have been visiting the holistic wellbeing clinic have exhibited the fourth f , FATIGUE a sense of complete exhaustion and lethargy.
Let's put this into perspective, in our previous episode we talked about stress physiology, the body's survival mechanism, fight, flight and freeze. These are warning signals from the body to the brain, that we are under threat
If we have not learned how to reset or recalibrate that stress response at the alarm or resistance phase, and continue to function in the cycle of 'living on your adrenals' we eventually arrive at the fourth f, which is fatigue.
What does 'living on our adrenals' mean?
The adrenal system is associated with the endocrine system can be viewed as our ' battery pack' An analogy would be a vehicle. If the battery is drained nothing's going to really function, and reduce its performance substantially.
Feeling tired on waking, loss of appetite, skipping breakfast, eating on the go or at the desk, sleepy at 3-5pm, large meal after work and when its time to sleep we wrestle with a restless mind. When we consistently push ourselves into overdrive without paying attention to respite, we deplete our resources. Living like this for long periods has serious implications on health.
Effective treatments
Medical doctors are not trained nor equipped to treat fatigue. There is no magic pill, and often wait to see how patients respond to respite. Blood markers are often normal, in most cases patients have been referred to the holistic wellbeing clinic for 'psychosomatic' condition, meaning there is no clinical reason why they should be feeling this way.
Other assessment questionnaires used to monitor low energy and mood are PHQ (performance health questionnaires) or GAD (general anxiety disorder). Antidepressants are often first line prescriptions for treatment , which doesn't really deal with the underlying issue.
How do you know you are living on your adrenals?
one of the inclusion criteria we have on our referral form is lock down syndrome, which includes low mood, apathy, fatigue - because these are the common patterns and symptoms exhibited.

Over 60% of clients referred for holistic coaching showed symptoms of stress, low mood and anxiety as assessed by GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scale, , often with other co-morbidities such as high cholesterol, hypertension.
Many have felt relief when they discover the symptoms are predictable patterns of stress physiology impacting digestion, mood, reproduction, energy levels, and that they are not alone - there are many others feeling similar impressions upon their mental & physical wellbeing.
The great thing about the stress response is its predictability – because of this we can do something about it and navigate or change the narrative of the outcome.
Most people are familiar with the fight, fight and freeze response. The body shuts down the least important functions such as digestion and reproduction, and redirects its resources to survival. Energy reserves are cascaded to muscles, heart, brain for speed, agility and for action.
This is why long term effects of stress lead to an inflammatory response such as allergies, digestive and fertility issues. Other common symptoms may include anxiety, palpitations, shallow breathing, inability to ‘switch off’ or sleep, or a feeling that something is not right, as well as low mood and energy, tearful or emotional without cause are all common ‘side effects’ of long term stress.
At the initial stage, alarm phase, these symptoms are considered ‘psychosomatic’ responses as blood tests often do not show any signs of imbalances, and health care professionals are not equipped or trained to deal with prevention.
Short term stress is necessary and healthy for the body-mind for growth. However, long term stress and the inability to cope with too many demands / pressure is detrimental to wellbeing – this may contribute to (and be the underlying issue of) many chronic long term conditions such as heart disease and mental health.
Unfortunately, many of us have found ourself in alien territory during lockdown, being isolated from people and activities that managed our mental and physical wellbeing, or forced into uncommon or unhealthy situations that has compounded our ability to cope.
Health coaches with life experience in stress management are suitably placed to offer advice and facilitate wellbeing for those seeking help to reset the stress response.
Stress physiology is really simple to deactivate when you know how. All it requires is discipline to integrate techniques, which empower the body to recalibrate.

However, through lifestyle coaching, we dig deeper, beyond the symptoms, and uncover the source of stress masked behind the symptoms. Gee and Toddshare examples of how they have facilitated clients to rediscover purpose, that imbibes core values and meaningful connections.

In todays episode the Wellbeing Wizards, we dive in at the deep end and explore Grief.
Unfortunately for many lockdown created one of the most traumatic experiences of loss and bereavement - heartache from mourning the loss of family members, friends, pets, or relationships falling apart at the seams. Loss of mental, physical and emotional freedom through isolation.
As intuitive coaches, we found ourselves sitting in silence, holding the space for clients attending the wellbeing clinic to begin to process some of the symptoms that masks underlying grief. Empathy, kindness and sympathetic ears were necessary skills to begin to transform wounds of anger, despair, sorrow, loneliness and heart ache.
Many of us are unaware of how to recognise or manage grief. Often we find a way to escape from processing the emotion, and like mist, it disappears into the deeper layers of our fascia emerging as a transformed symptom of breathlessness, inflammation of skin or bowels, slow murmur of the heart.
In essence the shock of loss displaces our breathing pattern and Heart beat. Grief is an emotion that sits heavy on the chest, when unprocessed it can transform to silent depression , lack of joy and purpose. Long term effects of unprocessed grief can lead to depression, mental health issues and obesity.
We invite our listeners to keep an open mind and engage with us as we explore 'conversations with Spirit', and shine different perspectives of loss and processing grief, and introduce effective techniques that have served our clients.
