  • We're Making A Movie: Post-Production Sound with Jacob Zacharia

Post-production sound is HOT on our brains right now, and we're diving even deeper into the wonderful world of sound with a very special guest: OUR sound designer, Jacob Zacharia!

We're so excited to have Jake on board for Turns Out It's the Apocalypse… We Think, not only to sweeten the already pretty fantastic audio we captured on set, but to bring the world of our movie to life through Foley, sound design, and all those little details you might not even notice until they're missing.

Plus, we've got some pretty hefty sections of voiceover in our movie, and Jake is helping us bring those to life, too!

So what exactly goes into sound design for a feature film? How much of what we hear in a movie is actually created in post? And how does a sound designer take everything recorded on set and turn it into a fully realized world?

    —--

Sound designer and mixer Jacob Zacharia has been sonically involved in everything from live music and theater to short and feature-length films for the better part of 15 years. The NJ native magician's son started out as a recording and live sound engineer, focusing on jazz and R&B music. During his tenure co-owning and managing a Manhattan recording studio, Jacob found his way into post-production for film, TV, and advertisements via ADR and voice-over recording sessions. He is fortunate enough to work in both the live sound and studio worlds as the associate production manager at Judson Memorial Church, and with artists such as Ewurakua Dawson-Amoah, Hush Forte, SIRA, Sarah Goeke, and many more.

  • We're Making A Movie: Intro to Sound

Sound for your films is INSANELY important. We've heard time and time again that so much can be forgiven when it comes to independent filmmaking, but terrible sound will possibly make it unwatchable.

We're diving into the wonderful (and slightly overwhelming) world of sound! From capturing dialogue on set to recording ADR in post-production, there's a whole lot that goes into making a movie sound good.

What exactly does a sound designer do? What's the difference between sound editing and mixing? What the heck is Foley? And how much of what we hear in a finished movie was actually recorded on set? Over the next few weeks, we hope to answer all our questions.

We're cracking open the research books (errr… well, Google) and digging into the nitty-gritty of the sound world.

  • We're Making A Movie: Filmmaker Chat with Stephen Takashima

Stephen made his first feature film, and we’re going to find out HOW?!

We’re back with another filmmaker chat, and this time we’re sitting down with writer, director, and editor Stephen Takashima to talk about his debut feature, Don't Kill My Vibe. The movie follows two estranged friends whose road trip goes off the rails when they discover they've accidentally been transporting drugs. It’s a film that feels grand in scope but has all the makings of a smart indie production: a small cast, a handful of locations, and a story that makes the most of its resources without feeling limited by them. It was not only a very enjoyable movie to watch but also completely inspiring!

Stephen Takashima is an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles. His human-centric approach to storytelling and knack for blending genres have taken his work to Oscar-qualifying festivals including the Chicago International Film Festival and Hollyshorts. His first feature, Don’t Kill My Vibe, premiered at NewFilmmakers LA in 2025, and in 2026 he was selected as the Eric Zumbrunnen Fellow through American Cinema Editors (ACE). He also directs and edits branded and documentary work such as CIDP Unscripted, a project made in partnership with the Upright Citizens Brigade to teach people how to use improv to navigate life with a rare disease.

  • We're Making A Movie: A Chat with Our Composer Matt Sanchez

What happens when a rock star scores your feature film… fricking magic!

We’re so excited to introduce you to OUR composer for "Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think", Matt Sanchez! You may know Matt as a founding member of American Authors, but before the band took off, he studied film scoring at Berklee College of Music. And now he’s bringing all of that experience back around and diving into the world of feature film scoring for us. We are so excited to hear how work is going on Turns Out, how he found the sound of our movie, what the collaboration between filmmaker and composer looks like, and what surprises he’s found along the way.

    _______________

Matt Sanchez is a musician, songwriter, and composer who studied film scoring and composition at Berklee College of Music. As a member of the multi-platinum band American Authors, he co-wrote and performed on the global hit “Best Day of My Life,” helping earn the band seven Platinum certifications, two Gold records, and a Gold album. His music has been synced extensively across film, television, and advertising, and he’s written original music for films from Disney, and Warner Bros. Matt is also a member of Mother • Father, winners of the International Songwriting Competition, and is currently scoring the feature film starring today’s hosts.

  • We're Making A Movie: A Chat with Composer Jordan Roper

We’re not done talking about film scores yet!

Next up, we're chatting with Utah-based composer Jordan Roper, and once again we have approximately one million questions about how composers do what they do. How do you figure out what a movie is supposed to sound like? What happens when a filmmaker has absolutely no musical vocabulary and starts saying things like “Can it feel a little more… lonely?” Is there such a thing as secret music math?!?!?

Basically, we’re going to keep asking composers to explain their witchcraft to us until we understand it. ———

Jordan Roper began playing piano at the age of seven, discovered a passion for composition by twelve, and began composing and producing music professionally shortly after graduating high school. His lifelong love of music and storytelling has led him to build a career of composition, film producing, and executive production. Jordan attended Brigham Young University–Idaho, where he earned a Bachelor of Musical Arts with an emphasis in composition, music theory, and piano performance. He later completed a Master of Music in Film and Television Composition through the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program at the Seattle Film Institute. Since completing his studies, Jordan has composed original scores for dozens of short films and commercials, as well as several feature films along with also serving as an executive producer and producer on multiple film projects. In addition to his work in film, Jordan has taught master classes, worked as an orchestral and choral conductor, bringing his experience and passion for music to musicians and filmmakers alike. Jordan has been happily married to his beautiful wife, Haylie, for nearly 15 years, and together they have four children. He currently lives in the Boise, Idaho area and spends several weeks each year in Salt Lake City and Utah County, where he continues much of his film and music work.

  • We're Making A Movie: A Chat with Composer Judith Moy

Composers make movie magic happen… and, if we’re being totally honest, we have very little idea how that magic actually works.

So we’re bringing in someone who does.

Film composer Judith Moy joins us to talk about what actually goes into creating a score, how a composer finds the sound of a movie, and how music can completely change the way we experience a scene.

Judith composed the score for And Through the Portal We Go and has spent her career working across film and television, so we have A LOT of questions.

How do you turn an emotion into music? What does working with a director actually look like? How early does a composer get involved? And what do you do when a filmmaker says something incredibly helpful like, “Can you make it feel more… you know… sad?”

Judith Moy - Upon her move to Los Angeles, Judith spent a year working at Hans Zimmer and Sony/ATV’s Bleeding Fingers Music. Under the mentorship of Emmy-winning composer Denise Santos, she worked on projects including Eden: Untamed Planet (BBC) and Island Of The Sea Wolves (Netflix). She also contributed music to competition show Alone(History Channel) and Bleeding Fingers’ affiliated production library, Extreme Music. She has worked in music departments for productions including Best Foot Forward(AppleTV+), Organ Trail (Paramount), Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts (Paramount), Young Rock (NBC), and Boots (Netflix). Recently, Judith has worked under the mentorship of Nathan Matthew David on projects including Joy Ride (Lionsgate), Stephen Curry: Underrated (A24/AppleTV+), Diarra From Detroit (Paramount+), and The Brothers Sun(Netflix). Currently, she is working with Nathan on his score for the upcoming DreamWorks Animation film, Forgotten Island. Judith’s relationship with director Mike Hayhurst and Evening Squire Productions began while she was still an undergraduate at NYU with a 48 Hour Short Film challenge. In 2024, her fourth collaboration with Mike and her first original score for a feature film, And Through The Portal We Go, premiered and has since become available to stream on Amazon Prime.

  • We're Making A Movie: Composers and Film Score

The score for a movie is one of the most powerful tools in the post-production process, and we are so excited to dive into the topic.

Music can transform a film. Take a blah scene and really make it work. Pull emotions out of you that you didn’t even know you had. But how does a composer actually do it? When do they enter the filmmaking process? And how can the right score take a scene from “yeah, that works” to “holy crap, I FEEL SOMETHING”?

We’ll break down some of our favorite film scores, talk about the music that has stuck with us long after the credits rolled, and start digging into how filmmakers and composers work together to find the sound of a movie. Turn up the volume; we can’t wait to share what we’ve learned.

  • We're Making A Movie: We Watched Our First Edit

We just watched our movie! For the very first time!

This weekend we had the privilege of watching Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think from beginning to end and we want to share what it was like to see our very first feature film coming together.

It’s still in the editing process. There are still things to tweak, shape, polish, and build as we continue through post-production. But finally getting to see all the work our team has poured into this film was pretty damn special.

And it’s been a fascinating learning experience for us. We’ve made a lot of short films together, but watching a feature take shape is an entirely different beast. There’s so much more story to track, so many pieces to balance, and so much that continues to evolve once you get into the edit.

There’s still a lot of work ahead. Editing, sound, score, color, VFX—the movie isn’t finished yet.

    But holy crap, you guys.

    We have a movie.

And it’s getting closer and closer to the day when we finally get to share it with all of you.
