Welcome back to the “We’re Not Stumped” podcast! Host Mike Bolland introduces an exceptionally inspiring guest, Jonathan Cowley. Jonathan’s story is a profound example of resilience and determination in the face of formidable challenges. 

Jonathan's journey began in early 2013 when he discovered a small lump on his right hand. With a young child at home, bumps and scrapes were commonplace, so initially, neither Jonathan nor his doctor thought it was a cause for concern. However, a few months later, while on a family cruise, the lump became a significant issue. What started as minor discomfort evolved into severe pain, and the lump turned discolored, clearly signaling something was wrong. 

Following this alarming development, Jonathan went through numerous doctor visits and medical tests. The results were unexpected and devastating: Jonathan was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, with only about 20 cases reported annually in the United States. This diagnosis led to a series of surgeries, but despite the efforts, the only feasible option was to amputate his right hand above the wrist, just five months after returning from the cruise. 

Undeterred by this life-changing event, Jonathan immersed himself in rehabilitation and was soon fitted with a prosthetic hand. Unfortunately, the prosthetic was uncomfortable and did not fit well. Jonathan faced the difficult choice of whether to persevere with the prosthetic or adapt to life without it. 

Today, Jonathan joins the podcast to share more about his journey, the challenges he overcame, and how he transformed his story into one of triumph. The conversation will explore his experiences with prosthetics, his recovery, and how he navigates life post-amputation.

This traumatic incident could have easily defined his life, but Dave chose a different path. 

Despite the physical and emotional hurdles of limb loss, Dave's indomitable spirit shines through. He continues to ride his motorcycle, a testament to his determination and love for life on the road. Riding isn't just a hobby for Dave; it's a symbol of his refusal to be confined by his circumstances.

However, Dave's journey doesn't end there. He also candidly discusses surviving two strokes, which added another layer of complexity to his life. These strokes left him with a speech quality that he humorously likens to sounding “like I’ve had a bit to drink.” Yet, this change hasn’t dimmed his zest for life or his ability to bring joy to those around him. Instead, Dave embraces his unique voice and continues to engage with the world around him, often bringing laughter to his friends and family.

In this episode of the We’re Not Stumped podcast, I have the pleasure of hosting Dr. Eric Gabriel, a bi-lateral above-knee amputee for the second time. Born and raised in Levittown, Long Island, NY, one of the first pre-planned housing developments in the United States, Eric enjoyed a childhood filled with school and baseball. Later in life, he discovered a passion for softball and played competitively for 18 years, starting in his late teens. Despite the enjoyment, his aggressive playing style, which often included sliding headfirst into bases while wearing shorts, led to significant knee injuries. The constant abrasions and internal damage resulted in numerous surgeries over the years.

Eventually, Eric faced a difficult decision: endure the severe pain and immobility from his surgeries or have his right leg amputated. He chose the latter and underwent the procedure in 2009. A few years later, in 2018, he had his left leg amputated, becoming a bi-lateral above-knee amputee. Although these years were among the most challenging, they also brought profound transformation.

Eric found new purpose and meaning through adaptive rowing. Despite his amputations, he discovered he could row using a machine called an ERG, which led him into competitive rowing. He competed three times in the World Indoor Rowing Adaptive Championships in Boston, Massachusetts, earning a silver medal in his first championship. Recently, he placed first in the category for 60-year and older lower leg amputee males. In 2012, Eric was invited to try out for the United States Paralympic Rowing Team. Although he didn't secure a spot on the team, he remains deeply grateful for the experience and the inspiration and motivation from his fellow athletes.

Carter Viss was raised in Denver, Colorado, where his childhood was filled with adventures catching fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects near his home. With several saltwater aquariums to his name, his affinity for aquatic life was unmistakable, a destiny perhaps hinted at by his surname, which translates to "fish" in Dutch. Pursuing his passion, he obtained a Marine Biology degree from Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida, a place he quickly grew fond of, particularly relishing explorations of the picturesque nearshore reefs along the coastline.

However, tragedy struck on Thanksgiving Day in 2019. While snorkeling at Breaker’s Reef, his beloved spot, he was struck by a large boat. The impact resulted in the loss of his right arm, severe lacerations to both legs, and a badly broken left wrist. Following a complete recovery, he has dedicated himself to aiding those affected by similar accidents and advocating for improved boating and diving safety measures to avert future tragedies. Driven by his enduring love for nature and the outdoors, Carter is committed to enhancing the safety of our oceans for both humans and marine life.

Freedom’s Wings Arizona, a non-profit organization operated by individuals with disabilities, whether physical or developmental, has the mission of introducing the exhilarating world of soaring to such individuals. 

Their objectives include: 

• Introducing individuals with disabilities to the soaring experience through Therapeutic Recreation, offering demonstration flights free of charge. 
• Providing qualified individuals with disabilities the opportunity to learn soaring, with options including solo flights, attainment of a private glider license, and further progression. 
• Offering training programs for instructors, ground crew, and flying students. Sharing the joy of soaring with many people throughout the State of Arizona. 
• Advocating for the adaptation of sailplanes with hand controls in other glider clubs and commercial operations, thereby increasing access for individuals with disabilities to enjoy soaring.

In this episode of the We're Not Stumped podcast, I welcome John Werner. 

Mr. Werner, who retired from Xerox after 41 years in the fall of 2018, faced an unexpected challenge shortly after his retirement. Just a couple of months into his retirement in January 2019, he began experiencing severe pain in his ankle, leading to the amputation of his right leg below the knee two months later. Despite this life-altering event, Werner remained determined to enjoy life as he had planned during retirement. 

To cope with his new circumstances, Werner sought support from an online national amputee support group. Over the following months, he underwent the process of being fitted for and adjusting to using a prosthetic leg. Recognizing the significant impact of losing a limb, Werner wanted to ensure that others facing similar challenges knew they were not alone. 

In his efforts to support the amputee community, Werner reached out to the Sunbury YMCA. The organization generously offered him a room free of charge for hosting meetings, providing a valuable space for amputees to come together, share experiences, and find support. 

Werner expressed gratitude towards the Sunbury YMCA for their generosity and support during this challenging time. Despite the challenges he faced, he remained resilient and focused on embracing life to the fullest, albeit at a slightly slower pace.
