  • Championing Abilities with Nick Pryor of Ability360 - We're Not Stumped

In this episode of "We're Not Stumped," host Mike Bolland engages in a heartfelt conversation with Nick Pryor, the inspiring Athletics Program Manager at Ability360. Nick opens up about his journey from a small town in Dunkirk, Indiana, with a population of just 2,300, to becoming a pivotal figure in the world of adaptive sports.

Nick’s story begins with a life-changing incident when he was just 5 years old. A friend, recently gifted a shotgun, invited Nick and his older brother over to play, despite their mother's warning to stay home. While Nick's mom was busy cleaning the house, he snuck out, unaware of the danger ahead. As his friend tried to load the 12-gauge, it accidentally discharged, hitting Nick's leg.

He was rushed to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis and endured weeks of intensive treatment. Despite the doctors’ efforts to save his leg, including a complex procedure using a muscle from his back, the damage was too severe. Ultimately, his parents made the difficult decision to amputate his leg—a choice that turned out to be the best for his future. Nick reflects on how having a prosthetic leg has allowed him a greater degree of functionality than he would have had otherwise.

Now, as a key member of Ability360, a leading nonprofit based in Phoenix, Arizona, dedicated to empowering people with disabilities, Nick channels his experience and resilience into helping others. Ability360 offers a wide array of programs, including adaptive sports, independent living, and advocacy, aiming to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities.

In this episode, Nick shares how Ability360’s athletics programs, from wheelchair basketball to adaptive climbing, provide not only physical fitness but also community and confidence for participants. He talks about the incredible athletes who redefine what’s possible and how his personal journey fuels his passion for inclusion and empowerment.

Join us for a conversation that transcends challenges and celebrates the strength of the human spirit. "We're Not Stumped" brings you Nick Pryor's story—a testament to overcoming adversity and the transformative power of adaptive sports.

  • Amputee Headlines for June 24, 2024 - We're not Stumped

Listen as host Mike Bolland picks three limb loss/amputee headlines for the week and discusses them in these 'Headlines" episodes.

Headline #1: Michael Palin says he still talks to his late wife: ‘It’s a bit like losing a limb’

Sir Michael Palin has opened up about life without his late wife, Helen Gibbins, saying he still talks aloud to her.

The 81-year-old Monty Python star and travel documentarian announced in May 2023 that his wife of 57 years had died of kidney failure. She also suffered with chronic pain for several years.

Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Monday (24 June), Palin said: “It’s like you’re a unit, and suddenly you are not a unit any longer, and it’s a bit like losing a bit of a limb, you’re not quite sure where you are.”

“She was great and we have good memories. So much of your own life is invested in that one person so there is a huge slice of my life which I now can’t really access in the same way. The couple had three children and four grandchildren, and celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary just two-and-a-half weeks before her death.

Headline #2, courtesy of: Blue Arbor goes beneath the surface for better control of limb prosthetics

Blue Arbor Technologies is developing implantable sensors to give patients better control of cutting-edge prosthetic arms and hands — with potential exoskeleton applications in the future.

In April 2024, the FDA gave breakthrough device designation to Blue Arbor’s RESTORE Neuromuscular Interface System and enrolled it in the agency’s Total Product Life Cycle Advisory Program (TAP) pilot to get the technology to patients faster. (RESTORE is an acronym of “Reimagining Engineering Solutions To Optimize Restoration of Extremities.”)

Research efforts started in 2007 and have since totaled $45 million, said Blue Arbor co-founder and President Dr. Paul Cederna.

Headline #3: Prototype Smart Socket Shows Promise for Amputees’ Comfort. This is from our friends at Amplitude Magazine

A few years ago, Amplitude surveyed the latest breakthroughs in “smart sockets,” or sockets that auto-adjust in real time to fluctuations in the size and shape of the residual limb (“Smart Sockets Are on the Horizon,” November/December 2021). Such devices could reduce or eliminate the near-universal aggravations that come with socket misfits, including blisters, sores, rashes, and circulatory problems.

One of the research initiatives cited in that article, the University of Washington’s motor-driven smart socket, has reached the early testing phase—and the results are encouraging. In a new paper published last month in Nature Scientific Reports, the UW team shared the outcomes of an early trial involving an auto-adjusting socket. The prototype device offered two innovative modes of real-time socket adjustment—manual adjustment via a smartphone application, and automated adjustment driven by sensors embedded within the socket.

  • Right Hand Amputee Podcast Jonathan Cowley - We're Not Stumped

Welcome back to the “We’re Not Stumped” podcast! Host Mike Bolland introduces an exceptionally inspiring guest, Jonathan Cowley. Jonathan’s story is a profound example of resilience and determination in the face of formidable challenges.

Jonathan's journey began in early 2013 when he discovered a small lump on his right hand. With a young child at home, bumps and scrapes were commonplace, so initially, neither Jonathan nor his doctor thought it was a cause for concern. However, a few months later, while on a family cruise, the lump became a significant issue. What started as minor discomfort evolved into severe pain, and the lump turned discolored, clearly signaling something was wrong.

Following this alarming development, Jonathan went through numerous doctor visits and medical tests. The results were unexpected and devastating: Jonathan was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, with only about 20 cases reported annually in the United States. This diagnosis led to a series of surgeries, but despite the efforts, the only feasible option was to amputate his right hand above the wrist, just five months after returning from the cruise.

Undeterred by this life-changing event, Jonathan immersed himself in rehabilitation and was soon fitted with a prosthetic hand. Unfortunately, the prosthetic was uncomfortable and did not fit well. Jonathan faced the difficult choice of whether to persevere with the prosthetic or adapt to life without it.

Today, Jonathan joins the podcast to share more about his journey, the challenges he overcame, and how he transformed his story into one of triumph. The conversation will explore his experiences with prosthetics, his recovery, and how he navigates life post-amputation.

    Jonathan, welcome to the show!

  • Above Knee (Knee Disarticulation) Amputee Podcast with guest Dave Gibson

In the latest episode of the "We’re Not Stumped" podcast, the spotlight is on Dave Gibson, an inspiring individual from Arizona who shares his powerful story of resilience and humor in the face of life's daunting challenges. Dave was born and raised in Southern California and moved to Arizona in the spring of 2004. He loves riding motorcycles, playing hockey, and being introduced to anything new. Dave's journey is marked by a series of life-altering events, beginning with a severe motorcycle accident that led to the loss of his left leg. This traumatic incident could have easily defined his life, but Dave chose a different path.

Despite the physical and emotional hurdles of limb loss, Dave's indomitable spirit shines through. He continues to ride his motorcycle, a testament to his determination and love for life on the road. Riding isn't just a hobby for Dave; it's a symbol of his refusal to be confined by his circumstances.

However, Dave's journey doesn't end there. He also candidly discusses surviving two strokes, which added another layer of complexity to his life. These strokes left him with a speech quality that he humorously likens to sounding “like I’ve had a bit to drink.” Yet, this change hasn’t dimmed his zest for life or his ability to bring joy to those around him. Instead, Dave embraces his unique voice and continues to engage with the world around him, often bringing laughter to his friends and family.

Throughout the podcast, Dave opens up about the challenges he has faced, offering an honest and heartfelt look at his journey. From the initial shock of his accident and strokes to the daily struggles and triumphs of living as an amputee, he provides valuable insights and encouragement for others facing similar obstacles.

Listeners of "We’re Not Stumped" will find Dave’s story both moving and uplifting. His experiences highlight not only the physical and mental battles that come with severe medical issues but also the incredible resilience of the human spirit. Dave Gibson's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of maintaining a sense of humor, even in the toughest times.

  • We're Not Stumped with Dr. Eric Gabriel Bilateral Above Knee Amputee Podcast

In this episode of the We’re Not Stumped podcast, I have the pleasure of hosting Dr. Eric Gabriel, a bi-lateral above-knee amputee for the second time. Born and raised in Levittown, Long Island, NY, one of the first pre-planned housing developments in the United States, Eric enjoyed a childhood filled with school and baseball. Later in life, he discovered a passion for softball and played competitively for 18 years, starting in his late teens. Despite the enjoyment, his aggressive playing style, which often included sliding headfirst into bases while wearing shorts, led to significant knee injuries. The constant abrasions and internal damage resulted in numerous surgeries over the years.

Eventually, Eric faced a difficult decision: endure the severe pain and immobility from his surgeries or have his right leg amputated. He chose the latter and underwent the procedure in 2009. A few years later, in 2018, he had his left leg amputated, becoming a bi-lateral above-knee amputee. Although these years were among the most challenging, they also brought profound transformation.

Eric found new purpose and meaning through adaptive rowing. Despite his amputations, he discovered he could row using a machine called an ERG, which led him into competitive rowing. He competed three times in the World Indoor Rowing Adaptive Championships in Boston, Massachusetts, earning a silver medal in his first championship. Recently, he placed first in the category for 60-year and older lower leg amputee males. In 2012, Eric was invited to try out for the United States Paralympic Rowing Team. Although he didn't secure a spot on the team, he remains deeply grateful for the experience and the inspiration and motivation from his fellow athletes.

  • We're Not Stumped Podcast with Friendly Like Me Accessibility App CEO Elysia Everett

In this episode on the We're Not Stumped podcast, I'm honored to have Elysia Everett, founder and CEO of Friendly Like Me.

Friendly Like Me is an innovative app dedicated to finding and reviewing accessible places. Its mission is to enhance accessibility in public spaces and make it easier for everyone to discover accessible locations, ensuring more people can participate in various activities without hindrance. Access to accurate accessibility information is vital for full participation in society. Unfortunately, such information is often scarce, subjective, and difficult to find. This lack of reliable data frequently prevents individuals from engaging in activities they would otherwise enjoy, including visiting size-friendly and accessible businesses across the United States. Friendly Like Me is committed to changing this, benefiting everyone.

Through collaboration with reviewers, advocates, and business owners, Friendly Like Me strives to create more welcoming and accessible places. The platform facilitates interaction between people and businesses about specific accommodations needed to attract customers who prioritize accessibility. It's worth noting that US adults with disabilities, including many individuals of higher weights, represent the third-largest market segment in the country. According to the American Institute for Research, the discretionary income for working-age persons with disabilities is $21 billion.

Businesses can claim their listings on Friendly Like Me to inform patrons about their amenities and any limitations. Transparency is key—it's very friendly to let people know in advance if they cannot accommodate them. Friendly Like Me's reviews focus on the presence or absence of specific accommodations, reducing the subjectivity often found in star-based review systems.

  • We're Not Stumped, Carter Viss Upper Limb Amputee and Nonprofit Founder

Carter Viss was raised in Denver, Colorado, where his childhood was filled with adventures catching fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects near his home. With several saltwater aquariums to his name, his affinity for aquatic life was unmistakable, a destiny perhaps hinted at by his surname, which translates to "fish" in Dutch. Pursuing his passion, he obtained a Marine Biology degree from Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida, a place he quickly grew fond of, particularly relishing explorations of the picturesque nearshore reefs along the coastline.

However, tragedy struck on Thanksgiving Day in 2019. While snorkeling at Breaker’s Reef, his beloved spot, he was struck by a large boat. The impact resulted in the loss of his right arm, severe lacerations to both legs, and a badly broken left wrist. Following a complete recovery, he has dedicated himself to aiding those affected by similar accidents and advocating for improved boating and diving safety measures to avert future tragedies. Driven by his enduring love for nature and the outdoors, Carter is committed to enhancing the safety of our oceans for both humans and marine life.
