WeShare (Ryan Purdy) speaks to Dr Saif Ahmad, cancer clinician and co-founder of NeutroCheck. NeutroCheck is a Cambridge based healthcare start-up developing novel lateral flow technologies to enable detection of blood cells (neutrophils) from point-of-care finger-prick blood samples. The NeutroCheck device is aimed at identifying cancer chemotherapy patients at risk of life-threatening neutropenic sepsis (infection while neutrophils, or white blood cell levels, are low). This low-cost portable device has the potential to prevent over 50,000 A&E visits each year in the UK, saving healthcare providers such as the NHS tens of millions of pounds, whilst preventing antibiotic resistance, improving patient care and clinical outcomes.
