Psalm 148 exhorts not only people to praise the Lord, but all creation: angels, the stars, highest heaven, animals, insects, even weather, mountains. None is left out, from highest to lowest. Why do this? Can they respond to this exhortation?
He is making a rhetorical statement: all this is… was made by the Great I Am, all of creation pours forth speech in praise to God…echoes of Psalm 19
1 The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
2Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
3There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
The trees move in the wind, the song of the sparrow in flight, the crashing of the waves on the Outer Banks or the still silence of the Blue Ridge Mts…they all pour forth speech in praise to God…our world is not a silent world. All bears God's handiwork. Just as you and I are made to worship, so is all creation. All things were made to share in the joy of our Creator.
Contrary to popular opinion, just as our world is not a silent world, nor is the larger universe empty and void, but is full of the worship of God. The praise of God is truly the song of all creation.
