  • Worship Grounds and Sustains Us In What Is True - Worship Living in Awe Week 2 - Rev Clark Chilton

Have you ever seen the show Married at First Sight? You basically marry someone sight unseen. The first time you meet them is on the altar.

One guy went to the altar, flowers in hand, and a gloomy and yet nervous expression on his face. But when she stepped through the doors, everything changed. She was beautiful! Suddenly his glum demeanor disappeared. The thought of marrying this woman was no longer a dreaded duty. I am delighted with how this has worked out.

What had changed? He'd seen her.

Sometimes, we can worship God out of obligation. We drag ourselves to church, force ourselves to serve others—but our hearts aren't in it. Nothing is grounding you. Nothing is sustaining you. We're like that guy on the show, grudgingly holding flowers for God. We're trying to live lives of worship because we know we should, but it's burdensome, joyless.

What can change this? Seeing God. Remembering that worship grounds us and sustains in us what is true.

In marriage, the vows draw you back to what is true. Ideally, it should keep you grounded. At its best, marriage can sustain you in the storms of life. There is safety in that covenant. There is freedom within those vows.

Now what if you just walked out of the house without saying goodbye? Or show up whenever? You can say you’re married in word, but not in reality. The relationship will suffer.

You can say you’re a Christian and not worship, you can say you’re a Christian and not go to church very much, you can do that…but the relationship with God will suffer.

Worship grounds us in what is true. Worship sustains us in our spiritual lives.

    Isaiah 6:1-8, Luke 5:1-11

In His presence, we find our place and our purpose.

Everyone has an opinion today. I heard it said if you want to start an argument, state an opinion on Facebook and…wait. Opinions are not reality.

Apart from finding regeneration to the Holy Spirit, human beings have upside down opinions of what is actually true because of the work of sin in our world. In our natural state, we have a very high view of ourselves, our position in our place in the universe and a very low view or a complete ignorance to the things of God and the workings of the spiritual world.

This is another reason why the gospel IS such good news… To those who have a very high view of self it shows the deep need the human condition has for finding truth about our place in the universe and also our purpose.

Without the grace of God helping us to see and hear, we are lost. Apart from God’s presence, we can never find our place and our purpose.

It’s the same way with worship. Apart from the grace of God, worship doesn’t make sense, almost like a blindfold that covers our eyes that God helps us remove.

Apart from growing in relationship and knowledge, a living relationship with Jesus Christ, worship does not make sense to the non-believer. It feels awkward at first, and it feels awkward at first because worship is not about us, and the natural man or woman doesn’t understand that.

Worship is about God. Worship is not about you, so at first, we don’t know what to do with worship.

And this is a supreme tragedy, for it is in the worship of God that we FIND our place and our purpose.

Oh but when you do step into worship of God, you’ll find that it is in the worship of God that we lose our lives and consequently find our life, in His presence we find the answer we are looking for, we join the song that all of creation sings but here on this bent planet, this sinful planet, its a song that we have to learn to sing by God’s grace.

In His presence, we find our place and our purpose.

  • Don't Resist The Resistance - Aha Moments Week 5 - Rev Clark Chilton

Sometimes if people want to kill you it doesn’t mean you’re doing the wrong thing. Just because its hard, doesn’t mean you’re on the wrong path. Resistance Shouldn’t Always Be Resisted

CS Lewis said, When the whole world is running towards the edge of a cliff, he who runs in the opposite direction seems to have lost his mind.

Light in contrast to the darkness. Truth exposing falsehood. A voice in the wilderness calling sinners headed toward destruction on the broad path, calling them to take the narrow way to life, to choose Christ and his forgiveness.

The world has always opposed this message of the Gospel. It cost Jesus His life, and God used it for His glory. The world doesn’t need a church that tells them what they want to hear. The world needs a church that speaks prophetically with power, love and self control.

In this story we will look at today, people are literally trying to throw Jesus off a cliff.

We are going to pick up right where we left off last week, the latter half of Luke 4:21-30

20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23 He said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Doctor, cure yourself!’ And you will say, ‘Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.’” 24 And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown.

25 But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; 26 yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. 27 There were also many lepers[d] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. 30 But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.
