While his followers must have been excited about Jesus entry into Jerusalem, it most likely left the mass of the population of Jerusalem baffled. Matthew may be exaggerating a bit to say that the whole city was in turmoil, but there must have been many people wondering. Who is this who enters the holy city on a donkey? Will he bring us peace or trouble? It seems that he was to bring both.

The central paradox of the Christian faith is that Jesus didnt come for those who think they deserve such a divine visitation. The truth is that none of us could earn or deserve such a gift. Jesus came to reclaim those parts of each of us that might be called ungodly. Though we could never deserve it, we benefit from Gods love for the ungodly.

Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be born again, not literally as Nicodemus suggests, but by the spirit of God. It is a chance to begin life again, to be birthed into the mystery of God's love for all the "cosmos."
