We live in a world filled with misinformation, flattery, boasting and outright lies. Many of us have trouble trusting what others say or how they present themselves with their words. In Matthew 5:33-37, Jesus explores the way we can use our words for sin, but more importantly he shows us a better way to live - “Let what you say be simply ‘yes’ or ‘no”; anything more than this comes from evil.” This message explores how God forms his people into people of integrity.

In a society where men often divorced their wives for any reason at all, kingdom members are called to build strong marriages which reflect the values of Christ’s kingdom. In this sermon, this is explained. The message shows how though a ’negative’ command Jesus upheld the sanctity of marriage; and applications are given to aid Christian couples in building fulfilling marriages in Christ. The sermon also gives hope and assurance to those Christians who have experienced divorce and who are now remarried.

In Jesus’ introduction to his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught that purity of heart is one of the character qualities of the members of His kingdom (Matthew 5:8). But how does a sinner develop a pure heart? In His teaching found in Matthew 5:27-30 Jesus addresses this question. He teaches kingdom members how to cultivate purity of heart. This sermon explains Jesus’ teaching, and provides practical guidelines for developing purity of heart on the part of Christ’s followers. The message also contains a challenge for those who do not follow Christ, to place their trust in Jesus.

Whether you know it or not we are all searching for righteousness. One of the biggest temptations we face is to find our sense of moral good and value in our outward actions. Sometimes that is in our religious performance, but often it is in how we compare ourselves with others to elevate ourselves. Jesus begins this next section of the Sermon on the Mount to show us how he fulfilled all of the Hebrew Scriptures and calls his people to a different kind of righteousness; one that begins in the heart.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus began by revealing the character of members of His kingdom and as well as potential consequences of following Him. He then used two metaphors to explain how His followers are to live in the world. In this sermon, these metaphors - salt, and light - are explained and applied. The gospel is also explained for the benefit of listeners who as yet have not believed in Jesus and become His follower.

One question which often is asked by individual Christians and churches is, “Are we being persecuted”? Jesus addresses this topic in the Sermon on the Mount. He teaches us that persecution is going to be a reality for His followers. He also specifies the type persecution He refers to. Finally, He gives instruction about how His followers should respond when persecution comes. In this sermon, these truths are developed and applied to 21st century Christians and their context today. Among other lessons the sermon will help todays Christians discern the difference between true persecution for Christ and righteousness versus other hardships which would not be considered persecution.

How can people find true happiness? This question is on everyones mind and the quest for happiness is everyones agenda. As a result, some seek happiness in money, some in power, some in education, some in relationships, some in performing acts of service, some in hobbies or sports or material possessions, some in sexual exploits and some in the use of drugs of many sorts – and all of these things provide a certain level of satisfaction for a time – but none for very long. Jesus, on the other hand, provides a clear answer to the question about finding happiness and the happiness He offers lasts. Next to the Psalms, one of the most well loved portions of scripture for Christians and some who are not is Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. This message is an introduction to the sermon, which is found in Matthew chapters five, six and seven. In this introductory message various understandings of the sermon through the centuries are given, before examining what the sermon reveals within itself regarding Christ’s purpose in preaching it. This sermon is the first in an expository series which will cover the whole of Jesus’ message.

As Christians, we must strive to keep an eternal perspective and realize that eternal rewards are highly valuable, but they have a temporal cost.
