August 24, 2023Funding: For Every ChildIn this episode of Western Teacher Live we’re talking about public school funding and the Australian Education Union’s (AEU) newly launched For Every Child campaign. Hear from AEU Federal President Correna Haythorpe and SSTUWA President Matthew Jarman. This episode will unravel the issues of school funding such as class sizes, a national workforce crisis otherwise known as the teacher shortage, which is has been sparked by a range of factors from workload issues to school violence.According to the AEU State of our Schools (SOS) survey in 2015, 28 per cent of principals reported that they were experiencing a teacher shortage at their school. August 15, 2023Don't swim alone, join the New Educator NetworkThe New Educator Network (NEN) is an opportunity for new educators to network in a variety of settings and has been around for over a decade.The NEN was originally developed on the east coast of Australia and in WA it has be formed to suit our context to help early career teachers.One of the best ways to keep in touch with each other as new educators is via the New Educator Network - WA Facebook group. The NEN Facebook group is for members of the State School Teachers' Union of WA who are education students or public school teachers in their first five years of teaching. Through the NEN Facebook group you can stay up to date with events that are happening for new educators as well as tune into free webinars plus receive a range of free advice on industrial and professional issues.What are your plans for today? Do they involved filling in an EOI for two upcoming new educator events?State Council Conference Guest Program State Council meets twice each year, and it's the highest decision-making body of your union. As a guest, we'll pair you up with a mentor, and you'll have the opportunity to observe proceedings, get to know other new educator unionists and learn more about your union. The program runs 10-11 November 2023. AEU National New Educators Conference On 18-19 November 2023, an SSTUWA delegation will be travelling to Canberra to take part in the AEU National New Educators Conference. July 27, 2023Alphabet soup sprinkled with added percentages: School fundingIn this episode of Western Teacher Live, we're talking alphabet soup sprinkled with added percentages, otherwise known as school funding.Did you know that every public school in WA is underfunded by nine per cent? That means public schools receive just 91 per cent of the minimum funding they need to meet every student's educational needs. Private schools are funded to at least 100 per cent of the minimum funding they need to meet every student's educational needs, with many over. This is before funding received from private school tuition fees.The state/federal school funding agreement is being reviewed and renegotiated this year, offering a once in 12 year opportunity to get the funding right.Hear from President Matt Jarman and SVP Natalie Blewitt about what this means for each and every public school student, and what members, parents and the community can do about it.
