“The Shalom of Jesus”

John 20: 19-23

1) What do you think of when you think of “peace?”

Is it similar to the biblical idea of “shalom?”

2) Consider this quote: The webbing together of God, humans, and all creation in justice, fulfillment and delight is what

the Hebrew prophets call “shalom.” It means universal

flourishing, wholeness, and delight. In other words, the

way things ought to be. Does this inspire you or give

you hope for the future?

3) Discuss the ways in which we can spread shalom. What

might it look like? What kind of “peace” is at the

heart of it?

4) What does being “filled with the Holy Spirit” conjure up

in your mind? Does it sound scary or weird or not?

Read Ephesians 5:18-21. What are the evidences of

being filled with the Spirit according to this passage?

1) When we pray in the Lord’s Prayer, “Deliver us from temptation,” what do you understand that to mean? Can you name some temptations that you often deal with?

2) How do you mostly think of yourself if you know Christ—as a “Christian,” a “believer,” or a “saint?” Discuss why. What is it about “saint” that you like or dislike?

3) Describe how you deal with your conscience when you know you’ve sinned. What’s typically your first reaction? Where does your conversation with yourself go from there? How long does it take for you to own it?

4) Do you find power in confessing your sins? Read 1 Peter 2:24. Is this your experience?
