The good news is that Jesus serves as our great High Priest. As our High Priest he represents us to the Father as our Saviour, Advocate and Friend. The key message is one of love, understanding and compassion so that our hearts are laid open to the heart of the Father. The writer of Hebrews emphasizes that believers are 'sharers' in the great work of Christ. We are not simply observers but active participants in the unveiling of God's kingdom. As such, the Preacher exhorts us to take our priestly vocation seriously so that others may see our Leader more clearly. Whatever we do - we are not to "turn away from the living God!" The Preacher of the book of Hebrews (maybe Priscilla?) names Jesus to be 'the Champion' of our salvation. It is Jesus who overcomes the evil one by passing through the death barrier and who grants us the gift of abundant life. In light of this resplendent gift our focus needs to remain sharp so we do not become distracted or swayed by competing goals. As we finish the Advent and Christmas seasons we turn to the angel's ecstatic proclamation to the shepherds of our Saviour's birth. Indeed, the angel sings out three names which describe the holy child: Saviour, Christ, & Lord. Each of the names focus on different characteristics of the baby king which will ultimately clear the way for our salvation. We live in a world of conflict, aggression, violence and war. Jesus offers us exactly the opposite peace, love and joy through reconciliation with both God and with one another. In Jesus we find stillness, rest and a deep sense of the shalom of God. The message of Advent is subtle, quiet, unobtrusive. It is not like the worlds messages that are screamed from gigantic billboards and worldwide newsfeeds. As a result the good news of Jesus as our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace can be missed it can slip by in the busyness of the Christmas season.
