Sara was one of the very first volunteers to join the mentor program in the library’s teen space and has been a weekly volunteer mentor for teens in The Ground Floor at the Monroe County Public Library for the past four years. Her volunteer position is to teach different crafts to the teens who hang out there. Her ACTUAL role has turned out to be providing a welcoming, fun, and safe environment for teens, while using her strong craft skills on the side. Sara has been a mentor in the truest sense of the word, always being kind and providing a sounding board for teens and their day-to-day concerns. She has proven to be reliable, consistent, caring, thought-provoking, challenging, supportive, creative, kind, and intelligent. Raquel Anderson doesn’t know any other way to be. “Active and involved” was the model she witnessed in her own family while growing up in Puerto Rico. It came naturally to her then when she moved to Bloomington to find ways to be of help. The lucky recipients of her time, talents, and dedication are Middle Way House where she is a member of the crisis line team, Bloomington Animal Care and Control, in her role as a foster to animals in transition, and El Central Comunal Latino where she assists members of the local Spanish-speaking community using her language skills and knowledge of local resources. It is her sense of “compromiso” that keeps her committed to these organizations and causes. Raquel encourages all community members to share their time with the community in ways that will help them learn and expand in positive ways. Read more about Raquel and listen to her story of service beginning Monday, Aug. 26. Airing at 7:55 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. on 91.3 and 98.1FM WFHB Community Radio or online at WFHB.org/category/news/activate_/.

Dianne Shewmaker has memories of being a young college student in Memphis and the effect the message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had on her. She had been raised in the south and lived during a time when the message of Dr. King was not as accepted, but what she heard and observed during those years affected her life and service from that day forward. Dianne joined the NAACP and the City of Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission to honor the legacy of Dr. King, to support bringing people together, and to end hate. The legacy of the words of Dr. King she first heard over 50 years ago still ring in her ears and she dedicates her life to service in his name. Read more about Dianne and listen to her story of service beginning Monday, July 15. Airing at 7:55 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. on 91.3 and 98.1FM WFHB Community Radio or online at WFHB.org/category/news/activate_/.

It was a lucky day for both McKenzie Goodrich and Barney the dog when they met years ago at the Bloomington Animal Shelter. The match was a good one. And one that would blossom into something good for the community as well. They have been volunteering together as a V.I.PAWS pet partner team through the Monroe County Humane Association program for four years now. McKenzie acts as Barney’s “voice” and his facilitator to connect to people in the community who can benefit from his skills of being “a big love”. They participate in the Animal Reading Friends (ARF) program at the library, encouraging early literacy, visits to Jill’s House to engage with people with memory loss, and are regulars at the IU-sponsored de-stress fest at the Wells Library during finals. Everywhere they go they bring smiles and joy. Read more about McKenzie and Barney and listen to their story of service beginning Monday, July 8. Airing at 7:55 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. on 91.3 and 98.1FM WFHB Community Radio or online at WFHB.org/category/news/activate_/.

Sara Laughlin came to Teachers Warehouse nearly a decade ago through her association with the Bloomington Rotary Club. She loves the mission of supporting teachers who support their kids. Teachers Warehouse is a resource for teaching and student supplies for teachers in Monroe County and a few surrounding counties. Sara has slowly elevated her engagement with Teachers Warehouse. She began as a Saturday volunteer and then transitioned to the weekdays after she retired and is now the board president. She feels like the work she does as a volunteer really makes a difference in the life of teachers, who she admires greatly. It is a special bonus just how much she enjoys working side by side with her fellow volunteers. Her goal now is to reach even more teachers with the resources that Teachers Warehouse provides. Read more about Sara and listen to her story of service beginning Monday, July 1. Airing at 7:55 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. on 91.3 and 98.1FM WFHB Community Radio or online at WFHB.org/category/news/activate_/.

Lori Dahlstrom has volunteered with Global Gifts fair trade store since it first came to Bloomington nine years ago. She was looking for an opportunity that would be enjoyable and not super stressful as a counterbalance to her professional life as a counselor. She enjoys meeting the customers who come into the store and educating them about the mission of the store. She is also inspired by the students who volunteer at the store and their enthusiasm for the mission and their global perspectives. Lori is not just a “key” volunteer at the store, but has also become an ambassador for fair trade. Her experiences as a volunteer have broadened her perspectives and have made her a more conscientious shopper in her own life. Read more about Lori and listen to her story of service beginning Monday, June 24. Airing at 7:55 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. on 91.3 and 98.1FM WFHB Community Radio or online at WFHB.org/category/news/activate_/.
