What are the new dot physical requirements

Listen Later

As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, the requirements for a DOT (Department of Transportation) physical exam were as follows. Please note that regulations and requirements can change over time, so it's essential to verify the most up-to-date information from the DOT or a certified medical examiner:

  1. Vision: You must have at least 20/40 vision in each eye with or without correction. You must also have at least 70 degrees of peripheral vision in each eye and be able to recognize the colors of traffic signals.
  2. Hearing: You should be able to hear a forced whisper from at least five feet away or have an audiometric hearing test if there are concerns about your hearing.
  3. Blood Pressure: Your blood pressure should be below 140/90. If your blood pressure is between 140/90 and 159/99, you may be certified for a shorter period and may require monitoring. If it's 160/100 or higher, you may not be eligible until it's under control.
  4. Urinalysis: A urinalysis is usually performed to check for underlying medical conditions like diabetes or kidney disease.
  5. Physical Examination: This includes a general physical examination to check for any conditions that may affect your ability to drive safely.
  6. Medical History: You'll be asked about your medical history, including any conditions or medications you're currently taking. Some medical conditions or medications may require further evaluation or disqualify you from obtaining a DOT medical certificate.
  7. Medications: Some medications are disqualifying or may require a waiting period. Check with your medical examiner if you're taking any prescription medications.
  8. Mental Health: The medical examiner may ask questions to assess your mental health and determine if you're fit for driving.
  9. Physical Fitness: You should be physically capable of performing the duties of a commercial driver, which can be demanding.
  10. Sleep Apnea: If there are concerns about sleep apnea, you may be required to undergo a sleep study.
  11. Diabetes: Drivers with diabetes must meet specific requirements related to blood sugar control and insulin use.

Please note that these requirements may have changed since my last update in September 2021. The DOT may have updated its regulations, and it's essential to consult the DOT's official website or a certified medical examiner for the most current information if you are planning to undergo a DOT physical exam or are subject to DOT regulations as a commercial driver. Additionally, individual states may have additional requirements or variations in their DOT physical requirements, so be sure to check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles or Transportation for specific details.
