What do DOT inspectors look for

Listen Later

Department of Transportation (DOT) inspectors, also known as commercial vehicle inspectors or CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance) inspectors, are responsible for conducting inspections of commercial motor vehicles to ensure they meet safety regulations and standards. These inspections help ensure the safety of both the drivers and the general public on the road. DOT inspectors typically look for the following during their inspections:

  1. Driver Documentation: Inspectors will check the driver's credentials, including their commercial driver's license (CDL), medical examiner's certificate, hours-of-service (HOS) records, and any other required documentation. They ensure that the driver is qualified and complying with regulations.
  2. Vehicle Registration and Documentation: Inspectors verify that the vehicle's registration, insurance, and other required documents are up to date and valid.
  3. Vehicle Identification: They check the vehicle's identification information, including the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), license plates, and any required placards or markings.
  4. Brake Systems: Inspectors examine the vehicle's brake system, including air brakes, hydraulic brakes, and electric brakes, to ensure they are functioning properly and meet safety standards.
  5. Tires and Wheels: They inspect the condition of tires and wheels, checking for proper inflation, tread depth, and any signs of damage or wear.
  6. Lights and Signals: DOT inspectors check all lights and signals on the vehicle, including headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights, and hazard lights, to ensure they are working correctly.
  7. Steering and Suspension: They examine the steering and suspension components to ensure they are in good condition and not showing signs of excessive wear or damage.
  8. Frame and Structure: Inspectors inspect the vehicle's frame and structure for cracks, rust, or any other defects that could compromise its integrity.
  9. Cargo Securement: For vehicles carrying cargo, inspectors verify that the cargo is properly secured and does not pose a safety hazard. They also check the cargo's weight and distribution to ensure it complies with regulations.
  10. Exhaust Systems: They inspect the exhaust system to ensure it is not leaking and that the emissions control systems are functioning correctly.
  11. Fuel Systems: Inspectors check the fuel system for leaks and ensure that fuel tanks are properly secured.
  12. Emergency Equipment: They verify that the vehicle is equipped with the required emergency equipment, such as fire extinguishers, reflective triangles, and first aid kits.
  13. Load Limits: Inspectors check for compliance with weight limits and axle weight limits to prevent overloading.
  14. Hazardous Materials: If the vehicle is transporting hazardous materials, inspectors ensure that proper labeling, placarding, and documentation are in place and that the materials are being transported safely.
