Richard’s journey in the call center space is filled with twists and turns. When he was 27 years old, he relocated to Costa Rica to train employees for one of the larger call centers in San Jose. CEO of Costa Rica's Call Center since February 2008.

Building Connections Through Pinball
You are really putting in that foundation. For me, it's pinball machines. I'll do pizza and stuff, but I always felt like playing my original pinball machines was my bonding. But to each its own, you need to find a way to put business aside and show your human side to somebody where you can laugh and cry together. And if you can do that, Then by natural selection, Sean, you'll find the perfect people that will be with you for decades.
Richard Blank's Intentional Move to Costa Rica
Where did this come from where all of a sudden, hey, let's go to Costa Rica. Is this something that transpired and it was intentional? A lot of times things aren't intentional, but you seem to be a pretty intentional type of guy. It was built on momentum. So many checkpoints prior to that huge life decision. If we may scroll way back to the late 70s and early 80s, there was Little Richard. And I really enjoyed Spanish on vacations. I would come back with some additional vocabulary and I was getting such reinforcement from the Latino community because it just wasn't a parlor trick or something cute for my parents to say, you know, Richard's in passing. It was something I wanted to dedicate my life to.
The Irreplaceable Human Element in the Age of Technology
If you lost a family member or something happens, you're not going to trust a computer hug. It won't work. And so I know that my industry might be boutique. but it will never go away. And as much as the computers will be taking over more things, there will always be that human element that we all want. And so am I concerned? I know the reality of it. And if this is maybe the back nine in the golden years of the call center industry, then at least I was part of it and I enjoyed this and I respect the art of speech. And maybe I'll just die a classic romantic and just go down with, That ship, it's okay.

-Building a business requires patience and perseverance.

-Self-awareness helps in making informed decisions.
-Fulfillment comes from pursuing what you love.
An Unconventional Path to Success
But this was a gift. It was a long shot that hit. I didn't go to business school. I was a Spanish major at Arizona. But I tell you what, instead of making 100% Richard, I want 1% off of 100 people. And I know I could have done that. I know I can train them like Dick did and be the best swim coach ever alongside you, my brother. And it's the kind of thing where when you meet great men and women, the number one thing you see about them is that they're grounded.
The Joy of Pinball and Nostalgia
I completely relate myself to Tom Hanks in the movie Big. I'm a 17-year-old and a 52-year-old. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and Ricky Schroeder had a show called Silver Spoons that had one of the coolest arcades, and I was so envious to a Generation X or owning a video game, a machine, or even a pinball machine. It was just so out of reach. So what happens? Recess is the best class in school. You know that. That's where you make your friends and let all steam. And so here I had the space. Fortunately, I had the discretionary income. I had a buddy with a truck and strong arm and back. And I would go on the Craigslist and the Mercado Libres and Don Jose four hours away is selling four of his machines because his arcade is out of business. And I'd go there with the cash. Grab them and come back like a champion. And so it's a wonderful game room. I have the largest collection of pinball machines and retro arcade machines here at the call center in Central America.

Building Rapport to Reduce Anxiety
And so do you understand that if you can flip that and jump that cloud and just put your chest out or be the full card in the turret deck, Then you can do this industry, or you can confront a teacher, a principal, other coworkers, because you're just doing it in the nicest introduction way for anchoring. And then if you do happen from Judy or Angela, for an example, to transfer me to Dr. Sarah, prior to introducing myself, you go, Dr. Sarah, I just want to know how great Angela is. You don't even know who I am yet. I know you did that. See how you do it. And you know what I love about that, too, is you're building rapport and you're really reducing also that stereotype threat, whether it's a threat of them going, this is a call I don't want, hang up, or even the person on the other end. Just by building rapport and, like you said, anchoring that first 30 seconds of the conversation, it really is going to bring that anxiety down about how someone is about to perceive this conversation.

Persistence and Perception
But from that component, you mentioned before about walking across the dance floor. Right. Getting up there and you've listened to a number of my podcasts. So apologies if you're getting the same story that you've heard before. But for the audience, the new audiences that haven't heard it, others have. But I had a friend in the army. I wasn't really a friend, but it was someone I was in the army with. He was a good looking guy, but he was a bit dumb. um in my opinion and but he was always dating these amazing women they were beautiful they were doctors and lawyers and and just really genuinely good people that would help out and we're looking myself and my friends are going how you know you're not that bright and you know yeah you're good looking but we were always thinking you know he must be well hung or something like that was you know i was 19 years you know those are the thoughts that go in your head And one day I asked him, and I said, Shane, and I did say this. I said, Shane, you're not that bright. How is it that you're dating all these amazing women? And he turned into this wise old soul, put his arm around my shoulder, and he said, Damien, what you don't see is I ask a lot. Most of them say no. You just see the ones that say yes
The Vintage Limo Experience
you were mentioning the limo not the kind of limo that your audience is thinking it's a restored 1984 300d lang that's why i want to be in it it's like awesome yeah put in a put in a bar I painted it black. I got the white walls and I found old school, like, hubcaps on it. It's cool. It's real cool. My influence from that was Remington Steel.
The Power of Listening and Open-Mindedness
But listen, the king that never listens to anybody, they don't last long. Some kings listen to some people. Maybe they forget gas for their car. Still doesn't work. Listen to everybody. Yeah. And then through deductive reasoning or whatever it is, choose the best because the people that work with me have given me some of the greatest ideas that, as you say, we might oversee because of distractions or just routine or in our offices all day, we don't hear the chatter. And so keep that open mind, put your ego aside and mind you that there are people there that are looking for your best interest. It just doesn't always have to be financial or something where it's office politics.

Personalized Sales Approach and Its Benefits
But Lynn, you brought up an amazing point. I can cold call, close you if that's what you want me to do. But no, Lynn. It's building a pipeline. It's selling for time. It's selling for information. It's respecting boundaries and protocols a company. Maybe. Maybe. Instead of doing 100 phone calls a day, you do about 80, so you can spend a little time doing some due diligence on a LinkedIn profile. Or a website, so I can custom make your voicemail, email, or when I call your company, I could say, hey, Lynn, how you doing? Eddie around, so it's like I already know with whom I'm speaking. So at least your first 30 seconds, you can jump clouds. And if you happen to hang up on me, I have romantic deaths because I can do funny minds podcast. Lynn, how are you? How's Eddie doing?
