Innovation failures come in different forms, but how do we make sense of them? This episode explores a process-oriented framework for understanding innovation failure. We discuss how task failures and outcome failures vary across different phases of the innovation journey, and present a typology of four distinct failure modes: unsolicited failures that should be prevented, hazardous failures that can be mitigated, fortuitous failures that provide unexpected opportunities, and excursive failures that can be harnessed for learning. Using IDEO's shopping cart project as an illustrative example, we examine how organizations can develop more nuanced approaches to anticipating, valuing, and learning from different types of innovation failures.
