Publisher's Summary:
In the second volume of What If?, today's foremost historians gather to speculate on what-ifs. This time the collection of essays delves into Napoleon's missed opportunities, the Spanish Armada, and how the Civil War might have turned out differently. Listen as watersheds, revolutions, and rebellions are turned topsy-turvy to jumble history and change the face of the world as we know it today. This provocative collection of never-before-published essays provides a fascinating new perspective on history's most pivotal events.

Intriguing essays
I purchased this audiobook to hear the Civil War essays. They are certainly interesting, but I also found the other pieces quite intriguing. Some lagged a little bit but on the whole they made good listening. I especially enjoyed Fleming's speculations on the American Revolution and parts of Horne's stories about Napoleon. As for the Civil War essays, McPherson did not disappoint in discussing "The Lost Order" and Sears held my attention, although his essay ended so abruptly I wondered if it was shortened to fit on the tape.
This is fairly entertaining to listen to and educational at the same time.
Another stunning collection of counterfactuals
If you've ever thought history was even slightly boring, try thinking of the myriad alternative human universes that could have been born -- indeed, that had to be avoided -- along the way to where we are. If the Armada had not been defeated ... if Lee had won the civil war ... the possibilites are endless, and if you don't experience little shudders of horror or nostalgic loss when listening to this collection, you haven't been listening hard enough.
