The next time you wake up at 3AM convinced of impending doom, I want you to ask yourself a question.
What if I’m wrong?
It’s fascinating to me how many smart people I know (and work with) who will ask this question non-stop about every strategy and tactic they deploy.
They say, “I think I should go left…but what if I’m wrong?”
They say, “I think the market is shifting and we need to adapt now…but what if I’m wrong?”
They say, “I think this presentation is going to really wow the execs…but what if I’m wrong?”
But as soon as they identify a problem they are completely convinced of their razor sharp insight.
“That thing I said in the meeting is going to haunt me.” Full stop. No uncertainty at all.
HA!
The next time you are worried about something, just remember that the REAL problem is that you’re sure you’re right.
TRY THIS: When fear and worry inevitably tap you on the shoulder, don’t just accept what they tell you, start an argument.
