In the United States it is estimated that more than 218,000 people don’t have citizenship — in the U.S. or any other country. This can make all kinds of mundane tasks, like opening a bank account or travelling, difficult to impossible. And with the Trump administration aggressively going after people without legal status to be in the country, many people who are stateless worry about indefinite detention or deportation to a country they have no ties to.
