• Restrictions: Most broadcast transmitters within the central area of the Quiet Zone operate at reduced power and use directional antennas. Cable and satellite are essential for acceptable television in much of the region. Emergency service radios and CB radios are permitted, but large transmitter owners must coordinate with the Green Bank Observatory. The most severe restrictions apply within a 20-mile radius of the observatory1.
• Purpose: The NRQZ protects the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in Green Bank and the radio receiving facilities for the United States Navy in Sugar Grove military base.
