Kate Rand & Gian Power share how leaders can make emotions safe to express at work, and how this improves performance. For Gian, emotions became his call when, in 2015, his father was murdered. He became involved in a high-profile international investigation and shares the details of how it affected his life. Gian says, "Those leaders who went out of their way to support me, I will go above and beyond for them. There is a direct link. If you go above and beyond for people, and show emotions and mean it. As a leader, people will go above and beyond for you. . . You improve performance, productivity, the bottom line." The experience provoked a life change for Gian: "I left PwC in 2017 – I wanted to ignite emotions back in the corporate world." Kate shares how her design agency sponsored a mental health day where people were encouraged "to share their stories of difficult situations. . . . It was a great way to help people start talking about these things. Everybody experiences difficult situations. It is important to feel they are not alone." Kate calls on HR to act more as a support function. "We are not there to make people feel bad. I see us as the people who should help facilitate the success of the organization."
