Originality, Identity, Destiny, Authority - they’re big life questions. And they’re not just for philosophers, artists and the deep thinkers among us. We all need to wrestle with these big questions. They’re important to us because they’re unavoidable, and they’re connected, and they shape how we live.

Our families, friends and communities are asking the same questions.

So how we answer is important. We can begin to answer the “authority” question, by following the four summary ideas

of Scripture - Creation, Fall, Redemption and Restoration.

Where

did I come from is a question of “origin”. 

When we know where we’re from, we’ll be better able to live lives that

fit with our design and purpose.

So

- where did we come from?  Are we simply

the accidental byproducts, of the random forces of nature?  Are we a cosmic accident?  Or are we, the pinnacle of creation, intended

by a personal and a loving God?

The

answer has significant implications for our lives. If

people are truly made in the image of God, then as Christians, we must treat

everyone with dignity. And, if we’ve been made by God, we have a purpose. We were designed to be in a relationship with God, and with other

people.

Do

you know the difference between features and benefits? A

feature is a characteristic that makes something unique and sets it apart from

everything else. A

benefit is how that feature can help you.

One

of the greatest features in the world is called the power of God.  

When

the apostle Peter described the benefits of that power, he said Jesus “anointed

by the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38) went about doing good and healing

people under evil’s influence. That’s

what the power of God does. It binds up

the broken hearted, saves the lost and it gives hope to the hopeless. 

The

four benefits we’ll explore this morning are -Salvation

for our spirit, Peace

for our mind, Healing

for our body and soul, and Deliverance

from destructive habits in our lives.

Unfortunately, not only

the quantity, but the very nature of the news helps to increase our sense of

hopelessness, our feelings of fear, and our dread of despair. Truth be told we’re

surrounded, and we’re inundated, by bad, horrific, mind numbing news. 

So

… today, in the face of all the bad news, we’re going to hear the best news

we’ve ever heard; courtesy,

not of the news media but from Scripture. 

From the God breathed, Holy Spirit inspired, word of God.  

What’s the great

news?  No matter what comes our way, when

we live in Christ, and Christ lives in us - we overcome.  

Really?  Yes! 

For every single bit of darkness, there will be light. And when light

stands next to darkness, light always

wins. A risen Jesus, means

that we have power in our lives, to help us overcome the things in life that

confront us.

My

father is a farmer. Growing up on the farm, I often witnessed seed time and

harvest time first hand. I

would go with my father and watch him prepare the fields months before he even

sowed a single seed. Hours

upon hours and days upon days he would work the ground, putting in various

substances to put nutrients back into the ground depleted by previous seasons. I

saw my father labour over the ground until he finally planted the seed. 

When

I read the Parable that Jesus told about the seed falling on various soils this

image of my father is burned into my mind and heart and I often wonder, if we

put similar care and devotion into the soil of our hearts for the

Word of God, what that harvest would look like?

Jesus

in the Old Testament is a study on messianic prophecy. What might Yeshua have

used in his teachings about himself?We will look at three Older Testament passages and see how they point to the

Messiah.

Much

around us is changing all the time. 

Politics changes, leaders change, technology changes. In fact more

changes have happened in the last 100 years, than have happened in all the time

people have been on earth before that time. But there are some things that just

haven’t changed.  The needs of people

haven’t changed at all. 

 

When we think about Easter, think about the

feelings the first friends and followers of Jesus must have had when they saw

him put to death on the cross.  Imagine

their devastation, disillusionment, and disappointment. But also imagine the

incredible joy.  Imagine the surprise

when just three days later, Jesus was raised back to life.

In

his final moments on the cross, Jesus makes three statements.  He’s been on the cross for about six hours,

when he says - “I’m thirsty”.  This is

something we say too. Not

everybody could say, “today you’re going to be with me in paradise”.  But anybody could say - “I’m thirsty”. 

It points to the human side of who Jesus

is.   

At the cross, we see Jesus for who he really

is.  He is truly human, absolutely one of

us.  His thirst points to his

humanness.  But Jesus is also “divine”.  His response to his thirst and the actions of

the Roman soldiers reveals him as God’s promised Saviour.  Together they tell us just how much Jesus

loves us.

Has anybody ever gone on a guilt trip?  God says guilt isn’t something He wants us to

carry around because guilt creates all kinds of fears in our lives. The first words of Jesus from the cross are what we

call the words of forgiveness - “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing.” 

Forgiveness is God’s answer to our guilt.To deal with guilt God says we’re to admit

The Bible tells us that the very essence of who God is - is ‘love’.  So if people are ‘made in God’s image’, if our lives reflect even something of the character of God, then we’re made to ‘love’. The single most important lesson that we have to learn in life is learning to love like God loves us.  In the lead up to Easter, we’re going to look at the last words of Jesus, from the cross; his words of love.
