Rafael Nadal has announced he will not be competing at the Madrid Masters event due to get underway next week.

More worryingly, he said he was uncertain when he will be able to return, merely that he hoped it would be before the end of the clay-court season.

So what next for the 22-time Grand Slam winner? Anything from a return in Rome or for the French Open, to even retirement has been spoken of.
