I spoke with Wykita Riley about her recent children’s book “I Matter.” This book helps children understand what is Black Lives Matter and what happened to bring it to the forefront. Children are well aware that something is going on but often no one explains what it means.

How do you cope with just going out in public?

I attended a Black Lives Matter solidarity rally and there were some key takeaways.

Let’s attempt to leave the playground behind us with the name calling. “You hack, nut job, ideologue, troll, idiot.” We label one another based on if they do not agree with us.

What I would do if I were in charge.

Words have so much power. Recently, a girl commented on how I was good looking. I didn’t show it but my confidence shot up 1200 percent! Cast words like a wizard casting spells. Cast the good words and compliments. Bad words and negative comments have the same opposing effect of good ones.

How do you deal with stress? How do you get out of the recycling of thoughts that keep you stressed?

I have gotten so engaged in social media that I actually feel like I am losing the ability to have meaningful conversations. The key was in reading.
