What the Breastplate of Righteousness Really Means

Ephesians 6:14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place...

We are moving on to the next section of the Armor of God, and we're looking at the Breastplate of Righteousness! This piece of armor is obviously defensive, protecting the front section of the soldier, and Paul is borrowing language found in Isaiah. In there, the Breastplate of Righteousness has connotations of God's justice and how He would put on the armor to come in judgment.

Paul wasn't writing about judgment but the fact that the new creation, the new person in Christ, is to be like God (4:24). To put on this breastplate means that we are to reflect the righteous and holy character of God in all of our actions!

As we take steps out in the world, this Breastplate of Righteousness is our outward sign that we are of the Lord and belong to the Lord. In the same way that the Romans would have insignias representing their Caesar, Christians are called to have the insignia of Righteousness and Justice.
