What The Hal?

In this extra, we're talking about the big story that happened back in 1997: Heaven's Gate.

Heaven's Gate was a religious cult of 39 people, led by Marshall Applewhite, that believed they were going to go back to outer space by suicide and board a spaceship travelling with Comet Hale-Bopp.

Joining us for this discussion is forensic psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman and FOX 11's Managing Editor Peter Wilgoren.

Easterseals is 100 years old in April of 2019. The celebration has begun with their first-ever float in the Rose Parade. They also started a new anniversary-year campaign on January 1st releasing a new public service announcement focusing on celebrating not separating or discrimination against those with special needs.

Easterseals participants say they are often bullied for being in wheelchairs, mistreated and looked down upon. That's what this new campaign hopes to change.

The Salvation Army of Southern California gets a chunk of the money it needs for its services throughout the year from its Kettle Campaign. Every year bell ringers lure us to their kettles as we go shopping. Officials with the Salvation Army say that because of an increasing number of people shopping online a decreasing number of people are passing their kettles at stores and malls to make donations.

Call it unintended consequences of technological advances. In light of that, the Salvation Army has been growing its online presence to try and makeup the difference in its losses. That's a process given that they have already lost for this past year 6% or some $300,000 in expected donations.

As LA teachers grabbed picket signs and took to the streets in their first strike action in 30 years, and as there are protests in states all over the country about classroom rooms sizes and proper care and resources for students -- we wanted to look at The State of Education in 2019.

Joining me at the table are some great educators. Julie Marsh is a professor of Education Policy at USC. Ivor Weiner is a professor from Cal State Northridge University's Special Education Department. Also at the table are Ioanna Sklavenitis and Annemarie Kingston. Both are teachers in West LA.

It's the first episode of 2019. Happy New Year everyone!

In this episode, my digital producer has been asking me to do a one-man show -- with no guests -- and just talk about myself.

So I asked those who follow my journalist pages to give me some things to talk about on this episode.  WOW what a great response! Thank you.
