Who the heck is this host?

Caroll Dweck is a licensed psychotherapist and career coach. She has coached hundreds of clients as the founder of Careers By Caroll and a member of the Pathfinders Team at Flatbush High School.

Have you ever wondered what goes into putting commercials on TV? Harris Sabbagh is a TV Media Buyer/Negotiator for GroupM. He works with TV networks like ABC, CBS and NBC to build out commercial schedules for Nestle’s Products like Poland Spring, Hot Pockets and Purina, just to name a few. Harris helps allocate Nestle’s TV Marketing Budget among its many brands and negotiates each individual budget with TV networks to place commercials throughout the year.

In this episode, Frieda discusses her TWO jobs! By day, she is an interior designer at Nicole Cohen Art & Design, and by night she is an aspiring TV comedy writer who writes sketches and comedy pilots in coffee shops around NYC. Frieda provides us with tons of insider information about the TV and comedy world and gives great tips on what is needed to break into this highly competitive industry. 

"Frieda went to Brooklyn College where she double majored (okay, over achiever) in Film Production and TV/Radio Studies. She wrote and produced several short films and web series (you can watch here). Frieda went through the UCB sketch writing program, which sparked a love of short form writing. Frieda has written three half hour comedy pilots, coming to a screen near you (jk maybe she’ll sell them and they’ll die in development, or they’ll act as samples to get Frieda hired to write for another show).

Frieda currently works for Nicole Cohen at Nicole Cohen Art and Design (@sketchfortytwo), and now she can't stay at any ol' hotel, only hotels designed by AD100 designers. She's not sorry about it.

You can find her in her bedroom where she works from home (or lives at work? am I right? Ladies?), but mentally she’s asleep in a matinee at BAM."

Ruthie is a social worker practicing clinical psychotherapy. As a psychotherapist, Ruthie helps her client reduce the symptoms they experience as a result of a variety of mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, PTSD etc. She does this by utilizing different modalities of therapy including Psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and more. Throughout her sessions, Ruthie creates a strong emotional connection with her clients and helps them process trauma, achieve self discovery, and become the best version of themselves.

Think software engineers are antisocial techies? Think again! On this week’s episode, Ovadia Harary breaks the stereotype of a software engineer as he explains his job at Flatiron Health where he creates software to help doctors accelerate cancer research.

"As a software engineer, I build tools to help solve a variety of problems. Recently, I worked with an intern of mine to create a software that notifies the company when we need to hire more employees. I also work with tons of data that is used to help doctors accelerate their cancer research, and so I always have to put myself into their shoes to think about how they would want the data to be presented. In this episode, Hayeem Rudy walks us through the steps necessary to become a medical doctor and explains why he chose to specialize in plastic surgery. He tells us about some really cool surgeries that he's worked on and breaks the Grey's Anatomy stereotype of what a plastic surgeon truly does.

"I can’t tell you how many times people have asked me why I chose plastic surgery if it’s just cosmetic surgery. It’s because plastics is such a broad field and the only surgical discipline based on principles. We use these principles and techniques to reattached fingers, reconstruct massive defects from tumor resections, repair gunshot wounds, reattach ears and noses that have been chewed off by dogs etc. It's SO much more than just breasts and butts." -Hayeem Rudy

Sylvia is a sales associate at Adjmi Apparel Group for the MAG Brands division. “As a Mortgage Loan Officer I help people become homeowners by arranging the financing for people to be able to buy a home.   What’s so interesting about my job is that I speak to such a wide range of people and get to learn about what they do (and how much money they make!). Imagine that I can help two people from opposite ends of the spectrum become homeowners- one a hedge fund manager that earns $1.5 million dollars a year, and the other a police man that drives for Uber as a side hustle to be able to buy a home for his family. Listen to this episode to find out what a dance therapist really does day to day and the steps you would need to take to become a dance therapist. Kim is a dance/movement psychotherapist who specializes in working with children. She’s currently a mental health coordinator at a preschool, helping kids (ages 2-5) express their many big feelings. Kim spends much of her time moving, playing, and processing in the vast imaginations of others, finding ways to bring their stories to life and exploring the deepest parts of themselves.

“I often specify that I’m a psychotherapist rather than a physical therapist, which means I work in the social-emotional realm. An easy way to describe what I do, is to explain that generally, psychotherapy is done verbally, however, a dance movement therapist uses the medium of the body and movement as an entry point to the mind. This sounds strange at first, but if you think about infants and how we’ve all developed, our most primal form of communication is actually nonverbal. This allows for deeper material to emerge in a way that words can’t access in our brains, memories, and minds. This does not mean that we don’t talk in sessions! We do! It’s necessary to verbally process the material, but this often happens after it’s been explored through the body." -Kim
