Embrace It All!

What To do When Your Child Feels Anxious and Worried

Listen Later

Children worry about so many things.  And as they grow, these worries become more than just monsters under the bed or shadows on the walls.  As they get older their worries become more  about being accepted by their peers, making mistakes, or not meeting their own or their parents expectations.

We live in a very uncertain world, and our children worry about things that we never dreamed of happening when we were their age.  And with so much overexposure of information about things happening in the world,  through the ever present media, our children’s anxiety can feel really heavy.

So what can we do to help them when this happens?  Through my own experience, and through much research, I have compiled the following suggestions that I hope will help you help your child or anyone, really,  when they are feeling worried and anxious.  In this episode we dive a little deeper into each one.

  •  Keep communication lines open by being available for them
  • Stop! Name it. Acknowledge the emotions they are feeling
  • Validate
  • Help them understand what feelings are
  • Help them understand their amazing brains and the power they have over their brains
  • Help them understand how to feel their feelings by getting into their own body
  •  Ask them if they know why they are worried or anxious.
  • Don’t shield them from their anxiety!
  •  Healthy habits
  • Life is a 50/50 of positive and emotions for a purpose

There is nothing wrong when your child experiences anxiety. Or any negative emotion for that matter.   And although it may be difficult for you as their parent to witness this, these tools that I share today will help both you and your child learn how to manage their anxieties and worries.  With your help and support, your child will become empowered over his or her emotions.

Disclaimer: If you notice that your child is experiencing more intense anxiety and worry, this could be a sign of a more serious type of anxiety and one that needs to be addressed by a Dr. or Therapist who specializes in Anxiety disorders in children.  They will be able to diagnose the specific type of anxiety your child may be dealing with along with more specialized tools and treatments.
