Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was Iran’s Supreme Leader from 1989 until his death in early March 2026, wielding ultimate authority over the government, military, judiciary and foreign policy.
He succeeded Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, leader of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and shaped Iran’s modern political system and regional posture for about 36 years.
His rule was marked by staunch opposition to the U.S. and Israel, support for allied militias across the Middle East (like Hezbollah and Hamas), and suppression of dissent within Iran.
