This week’s Talk Tuesday topic is on How to Tell When a Friend is in Need.  According to Psychology Today, “suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, with almost 45,000 victims every year. Approximately 123 Americans die from suicide each day, but many more attempt suicide or are plagued by suicidal thoughts. Suicide is a serious and complicated issue. There isn’t a foolproof fix for suicidal thoughts, and it’s not always easy to see when someone is contemplating suicide. As an often taboo and stigmatized topic, people are afraid to seek help or share their experiences with suicide.”

Love Pono sits down with Leeward CC's Licensed Mental Health Professional, Lori Lum, to talk about how we can help someone in need. What are the warning signs? What are ways we can approach a loved one if we think they need to talk to someone?

Kalei Ruiz is a Counselor at Leeward Community College. Today's podcast with Kalei shares how indigenous views on sexuality did not make it shameful the way it does with colonized worlds. This week, we focus on body awareness and language, specifically using the correct names for our body parts. For too many years, our society has perceived the use of vagina and penis as “bad words” or embarrassing words to say.  Often parents and other adults make cute names out of vagina penis, such as wee-wee or hoo-hoo or nani.  The Well-Armored Child talks about how that minimizes our bodies and it’ll confuse our keiki into thinking that it’s a playful thing rather than a more serious thing that should be protected. We also don’t want to bring shame to our body and speaking about them appropriately, biologically, can help our keiki be protected against abuse. April is Sex Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and Child Abuse Awareness Month.  Love Pono decided to focus this month’s Talk Tuesday on SAAM with “It Starts with Our Keiki.” As adults, a lot of what we learn and a lot of our behaviors can be traced back to our childhood.  Some lessons we learned were intentional but there are some lessons that were unconsciously displayed or the conversations we heard framed our perspectives. 

 Love Pono talks story with our Leeward Hui ʻOhana (student parent support group) on the nuances of parenting and being mindful of the lessons we share with keiki that can shape their body image, perspectives on consent, and understanding who are safe people to trust, and so much more.  It is important for us to have deeper conversations with our keiki and recognizing that we need to give our keiki moments where they can make their own decisions.  Our podcast dives into why these are important in shaping our keiki to be advocates for themselves and trusting their gut.

To close out our Talk Tuesday series, “what happened to me” is a podcast with Gwen Williams, our Substance Abuse Counseling Program Coordinator. Each week we unraveled layers of trauma experiences and coping mechanisms. We share this Thursday about the hero’s journey. We talk about how we can be our own heroes and not be rescued or rely on external factors to heal us. The hero’s journey is about finding the gift within the wound.
