1. KNOWN BEFORE CALVARY
a) The song was changed by changing one word…. At to by. We are looking at the Bible to see if this change is necessary to be biblical.
b) Calvary is Latin, Golgotha is Hebrew, and both mean a skull – Luke 23:33, John 19:17.
c) Calvary represents the cross or the place where Jesus died.
d) Psalms 22 and Isaiah 53 prophesy of Christ death and the events surrounding it before it happened.
e) Types and shadows were not known until they were fulfilled or understood later – Col 2:16-17, Hebrews -8:5, 10:1.
f) What we know today was not known by those in the Old Testament, knowing that Christ was going to die is different than knowing all that his death and resurrection would accomplish.
2. KNOWN AT CALVARY
a) Jesus himself prophesied his death and resurrection but even his disciples did not know what He meant – Matt 16:21-23, Mark 9:30-32, Luke 18:32-34
b) Jesus gives the reason for his going to the cross – Matt 26:47-58, John 19:28-30.
c) The disciples did not believe in his resurrection until Jesus appeared to them – Matt 27:62-66, Mark 16:1-14, John 20:24-28.
d) After his resurrection Jesus again explains the reason for it – Luke 24:44-48.
3. KNOWN AFTER CALVARY BY THE 12 APOSTLES
a) Israel now knows how they can have their new covenant fulfilled – Heb 9:12-28, 10:14-18, 1Pet 1:18-21.
b) His death and resurrection fulfilled the prophets proving he was the Christ – Act 2:22-36
c) Forgiveness to Israel through his blood – Act 5:29-32.
4. NOW KNOWN BY THE REVELATION OF THE MYSTERY TO PAUL
a) The Bible tells us that the purpose of the cross today was kept secret – 1Cor 2:6-8, Rom 16:25.
b) That it was not know until revealed to Paul (years after Calvary) – Eph 3:1-5, Col 1:25-27.
c) That it was by the cross, not at the cross – Eph 2:12-17.
d) The change in the song is biblical and accurate, the purpose of singing is to minister, and we must minister right doctrine – Col 3:16, 1Tim 1:3.
