Tim and the Pletts are away on vacation for the next few weeks, and so for the next three Sundays we’ll be hearing from different members of our community. This week, it’s my turn!
Before I became a parent, I thought about the sorts of difficult conversations I would one day have with my (at the time) theoretical children. I considered the awkwardness of the sex talk, dealing with bullying, the crushing reality of systemic and personal racism, and explaining other issues around inequality. The one conversation I didn’t anticipate being so difficult is the one that revolves around this thing we call God. As my own image of God continues to evolve, I find it increasingly difficult to know how to answer my children’s questions on the topic. Mixed into that meaty broth of complication is my developing understanding of the unexamined, and therefore unresolved trauma around my own spiritual education. I know from many conversations that this is a common conundrum for a lot of us in this community, and so this week I’m going to share some of my story, and some of the ways I try to impart to my children what is good about the faith I grew up in without reinforcing the guilt and terror that continues to adversely affect many of us that grew up in the church.
On a side note, I know this sounds like I’m only directing this at parents with young children, but I think a lot of us are in this community because we’re attempting to deconstruct much of what we were taught about God. That sort of deconstruction is what I will be spending a lot of time doing this week because, frankly, that’s what I spend a lot of time doing in the rest of my life.
As usual, we’ll be meeting on our Facebook group, here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/236618827497208
And Lunch After will still be happening this week at 12:30, but the link is different:

There will not be a Wednesday evening get together this week, but there will be one on the 21st of July. I’ll send the link for that next week.
I’m looking forward to “being” with you all on Sunday!
