Episode 60.

Who wudda thunk What We Watch When We Drink would get to this lofty number? Sorry, no commemorative tee or mouse pads. Maybe we do that for you – the fans – at LXXV. Maybe not.

#60 finds us chatting about the television shows we’ve watched and are watching. Some are great. Some are grating. We’re always the latter. Shoresy, The Pitt, American Primeval, Tires, Bookie, Zero Day, plus many more. So many that we can’t remember them all. Guess we’ll have to listen to the darn episode ourselves. We cover many categories since we’re such a diverse TV watching podcast. It’s not just game shows and Mexican telenovelas for us. We’ve grown!

We at the Boozedancing Entertainment Network feel your pain. We are churning out boozy content as fast as our A.I. chimps can dictate into our UNIVAC I. This A.I. revolution has a long learning curve, especially when you’re at Thrifty’s buying new vacuum tubes for the damn computer. It’s a pain.

With that in mind, this episode of What We Watch When We Drink is about pain as we watch the recently released, A Real Pain, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin as cousins heading off to Poland to honor their recently deceased grandmother. And pain ensues!

It was supposed to include movies and our highly acclaimed, somber, yet celebratory “In Memoriam” segment but two of us watch too much television, and one of us falls asleep at the movies and can’t remember the last time he was in a movie theater (Is that even an ongoing brick and mortar business anymore?) but certainly was annoyed at the price of Red Vines and a gallon of soda and that the restrooms were a city block away from Theater 11.

As usual, we dive deep, well, snorkel near the surface may be more accurate; can’t come up with names, shows and offspring; and talk too much about shows you’ll never watch. It’s what we do. And we do it with flair and whisky.

In some other podcast universe this circus is called The Bitter Old Men Podcast because, well, let’s just say that we’re not exactly a trio of rainbows, cotton candy and kittens. But we’re in this here universe and we keep the bitterness as a delicate accoutrement to enhance the What We Watch When We Drink cocktail.

In this episode, bitterness meets bitters as we speak to Gene Cooper of the McMann & Tate Cocktail Company. We chat with Gene about his unique line of bitters, garnishes and salts to enhance homemade cocktails. We even made our drinks for the show using a few of these bitters to put them through our rigorous quality testing.

And we dug into Trees Lounge, the 1996 dark comedy written, directed, and starring Steve Buscemi with an all-star cast of newcomers back then. It’s a brooding and bitter movie which is perfect for bitter men and cocktails with bitters.
