What Would Danbury Do? episodes

  • 21. Boomerang

Welcome to Season Three of What Would Danbury Do... All Bridgerton. All the time. In Season One, Rudi, Adele, and Kate took you through the original eight, the O.G. alphabetically named siblings, the Bridgertons from Anthony to Hyacinth. In Season Two, we worked through the Happily Ever After Second Epilogues. Originally, these second epilogues were published separately, but it turns out that these epilogues are now included in the original novels, so if you’ve come to the Bridgertons later, this might have been confusing! These episodes are available via our website, www.bridgertonpod.com or wherever you get your podcasts, so you can catch up there!

This season, we take it from the page to the screen and swan dive into Bridgerton on Netflix. We’ll be breaking down the episodes, talking to experts, and opining wildly about everything from fashion to fornication.

Here are the books we talk about in this episode:

    • The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley

    • Talk Me Down by Victoria Dahl (*note: we call this Hold Me Down in the episode)

    • Shadowfae by Erica Hayes

    • Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale

    • Moby Dick by Herman Melville

    • The Reluctant Royals by Alyssa Cole

This episode is brought to you by Erica Ridley’s latest novel The Duke Heist, part of her Wild Wynchester series. You can find out more information on Erica’s website, ericaridley.com and listen to a sneak preview of the audiobook at the end of this episode. Meet the thoroughly forgettable Chloe Wynchester just as everything in her plans go horribly, horribly awry (the best kind of introduction!).

Don’t forget you can find us on twitter and facebook @bridgertonpod and instagram @wwddpod and join the conversation using the hashtag #WWDDpod. You can also leave us a rating or review on your favourite podcast provider. Doing so guarantees that you become at least 15% more likely to marry a reformed rake.

This episode was recorded on the traditional and unceded land of the Gadigal, Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung people and edited by Rudi Bremer on Gadigal country.

  • 20. Violet in Bloom: The Bride of Bridgerton

In this, the final episode of Season Two, we get some back story to everyone’s favourite matriarch as we follow her from a young girl through a whirlwind courtship all the way to the beloved grandmother of an indeterminate number of grandchildren. More a montage than a full story, it’s nonetheless an insight into who Violet is outside of her role as a mother.

    Featuring:

    • A rather heartless math error

    • A dissection of what constitutes a successful romance

    • Many mentions of strapping footmen

    • Historical dildoes

    • #goals

    • Intergenerational misunderstandings

In this episode’s What Would Danbury Do, we head back to the hockey rink and hear from the love-lorn Shane Hammond who doesn’t know how to balance matters of the heart and his on-ice ambitions. You can find out more about Heated Rivalry, including buy links here.

This episode was brought to you by the new paranormal rom-com, Fairy Godmothers Inc, by Saranna DeWylde. Fairy Godmothers Inc kicks off a new series about the town of Ever After, the epicentre of enchantment, where love creates magic. But when the well starts to run dry, the town’s fairy godmothers decide to revitalise the town by turning it into a wedding destination. Book One features a second-chance romance between the perpetually unlucky Lucky and her chocolate mogul ex-boyfriend Ransom, forced into a fake relationship by their godmothers for the sake of the town. Expect shenanigans. You can find out more about this book by visiting kensingtonbooks.com or Saranna’s website, sarannadewylde.com

  • 19. On The Way to the Wedding: A Very Bridgerton Sequel

Gregory’s second epilogue doesn’t have any running, but it treads some very emotional ground nonetheless. And once again, we have to ask, what do the Bridgertons have against baby-name books?

    Featuring:

    • Hyacinth being more Hyacinth than she was in her own epilogue

    • Inexplicable genetics

    • A midwife who is not having it

    • Threats of bodily harm

    • Actual bodily harm

    • Seriously, just find new names already!

In this episode’s What Would Danbury Do we hear from Benjamin, the hero of Reese Ryan’s The Billionaire’s Legacy, a book that also features newborn twins and if you think we’re not smug about that, we are 100% smug about that. You can find out more about The Billionaire’s Legacy  including buy links by clicking here.

This episode was brought to you by The Rancher Meets His Match, by Kate Pearce, a contemporary Western enemies-to-lovers romance about a master carpenter, the girl next door, a run-down ranch, and second chances. Expect laughter, tears, swoons, and stories about family and community. You can find out more about The Rancher Meets His Match and the other titles in the Millers of Morgan Valley series by visiting kensingtonbooks.com or katepearce.com.

    Featuring:

    • A strawberry-blonde goth?

    • A *lot* of time in the spare bathroom

    • A *lot* of hidden drawers and false bottoms

    • A personal attack

In What Would Danbury Do this episode, Jonathan from One Night with a Duke by Erica Ridley writes in to ask that most important question: Can a Scottish man ever really fall for a sassenach? • 16. When He Was Wicked: Magic Michael XXL

Three years into their marriage, Francesca [f35] and Michael [m38] are still childless. But Francesca is slowly moving away from her all-consuming obsession with having children and moving into recognising that not being a mother doesn’t mean she won’t have children in her life. As her niblings grow, she finds herself spending more time at the Bridgerton family homes in Kent and London, visiting her family and engaging in their lives.

    Featuring:

    • Period math

    • Family fecundity

    • An unfortunate nickname

    • An oxymoron

    • Some very un-Bridgerton behaviour

In What Would Danbury Do this episode, we hear from Diana Miller, the heroine of Erin St Charles’s paranormal romance, The Minotaur’s Kiss which actually creates more questions in our responses than any real answers, but you can’t just drop ‘minotaur shifter’ into a conversation and expect that to be the end of it. You can find more information about The Minotaur’s Kiss, including buy links, here.

  • 15. To Sir Phillip With Love: The Squeakquel

Normally, we’d be revisiting the relationship between Eloise, Lady Crane (nee Bridgerton) [f39] and her husband Sir Phillip Crane [m41], but this second epilogue takes a couple of unexpected turns: first, it’s told in the first-person, and second, it’s told from the point-of-view of Eloise and Phillip’s eldest daughter, Amanda [f19]. We’re not entirely sure if it’s a narration, a diary entry, or a letter, but it’s a little taste of Julia Quinn, new adult-style.

    Featuring:

    • Our youngest heroine (so far!)

    • Impromptu French lessons

    • Changeable eyes

    • Editorial grievances

    • A literary gif

    • Canadian squirrels

In this episode, Lady Danbury receives a letter from Drew, the hero of Jackie Lau’s novella Ice Cream Lover, in which he details the perils of navigating romance after being the villain in a best-selling self-help book. If you love ‘the grumpy one is soft for the sunshine-y one’, this might be a story for you. You can find more information, including buy links here.

Colin Bridgerton [m33] and Penelope Bridgerton [f28] have been married for a very short time when they have to head off to Gloucestershire for Eloise’s wedding. Both Penelope and Eloise kept Very Big Secrets from each other: now they have to face each other for the first time since those secrets were revealed. Will their friendship survive not only the big changes they’ve gone through, but also the deceptions that live between them? WWDD?

    Featuring:

    • A secret finally revealed

    • A wedding

    • Deus ex Hyacinth

    • Peneloise!!

    • Truly staggering amounts of money

    • Sharks

Our WWDD book for this episode is Liquor and Laundry by Tasha L. Harrison about a long, simmering attraction that comes to a head (heh) and then leads precisely nowhere. Until maybe now. • 13. Benedict and Sophie’s Bogus Adventure

Sophie [f25] is now happily married to Benedict [m33], living in the country and apparently bored, because she keeps playing matchmaker for her half-sister Posy [f25]. This time, Sophie has set her sights on the new vicar, Hugh [m, age unknown but in possession of all his hair], and invited him for tea. However, tea is not drunk, sandwiches are not tasted, and roses are very scandalised.

Please note: this episode comes with a content warning for fat-phobia and discussions of unhealthy relationships with food

    Featuring:

    • Cinderella’s (sweet) step-sister

    • A very friendly vicar

    • Spy skills

    • Country living

    • Biscuit-shaming

    • Baby names

    • Sequel bait?

This week, Lady Danbury hears from Jolene, the heroine of Mimi Grace’s Along for the Ride, a contemporary romance about why you should never offer to help anyone move - you might end up on a road trip with a very hot, but very insufferable passenger. • 12. 2 Viscount 2 Furious

Viscount Anthony Bridgerton [m44] and his wife Kate [f36] met some number of years ago when Anthony was pursuing Kate’s sister, Edwina [f32]. During the course of their courtship, Anthony, both sisters, and several of his siblings played an infamous game of Pall Mall. For reasons that are unclear but are probably related to some sort of foreplay, Anthony extends a yearly invite to the original players for a rematch. For reasons that are unclear but probably have to do with Anthony being Viscount Bridgerton and rich and powerful, they all agree.

    Featuring:

    • Alligators

    • Anthony, still the boob man

    • The classic Freudian psychoanalytic theory, the ‘death drive’ which Rudi consistently and incorrectly calls the ‘death imperative’

    • Canadian passive-aggression

    • Mallets as metaphors

    • Uncomfortable class realities

    • Different definitions of ‘winning’

This week, we feature a enemies-to-lovers sports romance, Goalie Interrupted by Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn - a book Kate still thinks is called Goalie Interrupted, and now she wishes for the Girl Interrupted/Hockey mash-up romance of her dreams. You can learn more about Goalie Interference and find buy links here.
